According to multiple reports, the Calgary Flames have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with forward Connor Zary.

The deal will pay Zary an average annual value of $3.775 million.

Zary, a 23-year-old native of Saskatoon who will turn 24 before the start of the regular season, was the organization’s first-round selection in the 2020 NHL draft at No. 24 overall.

The six-foot forward broke into the NHL in the 2023-2024 campaign, putting together a strong rookie season with 14 goals and 20 assists for 34 points in 63 games played.

Despite a modest increase in ice time, Zary’s production declined a bit in his second year, as he finished the 2024-2025 season with 13 goals and 14 assists in 54 games played, though he was far from the only member of the team to find less success in terms of offensive production last year.

Prior to the signing, the Flames had about $15.4 million in salary cap space according to Puckpedia. Prior to the deal, Zary stood as one of six remaining restricted free agents around the NHL. Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis broke down the situation surrounding those six players, noting that one of Zary’s AFP Analytics contract estimates was for three years at an average annual value of $3.417 million.

Calgary is coming off of a 41-27-14 effort in 2024-2025, becoming one of the rare teams to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs despite reaching the 96-point threshold.

Powered by stellar goaltending from rookie Dustin Wolf, the Flames put together a strong record despite having just two forwards (Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau) surpass the 60-point mark.

Zary, along with 22-year-old Matt Coronato, is a candidate to elevate his game to provide the Flames with better scoring production from its depth forwards.

Calgary is slated to get its regular season underway with the next iteration of the Battle of Alberta against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on October 8.
