The Calgary Flames have signed defenseman Brady Lyle to a one-year, two-way contract, the club announced Monday morning.

Lyle, 24, racked up seven goals and 31 points in 51 American Hockey League games with the Springfield Thunderbirds during the 2022–23 regular season.

The six-foot-three defenseman, who shoots right, added an assist in two games with the Thunderbirds in the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Lyle’s two-way deal with the Flames carries a $775,000 NHL cap hit. He’ll be eligible to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent next summer.

Lyle joined the Ontario Hockey League’s North Bay Battalion in 2015 and spent parts of three seasons with the team before being traded to the Owen Sound Attack in 2017.

The North Bay product finished his junior career with the Attack before turning pro in 2020. He split the 2020–21 season between the Slovak club Detva HC and the AHL’s Providence Bruins before signing an entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins in April of 2021.

After playing another partial season with the AHL Bruins, Lyle was traded by Boston to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for future considerations. Lyle spent the remainder of the 2021–22 season, plus the entire 2022–23 season, with the Blues’ AHL affiliate in Springfield.

Through 139 career games over parts of three AHL seasons with the Bruins and Thunderbirds, Lyle has collected 19 goals and 61 points. He’s added three goals and 10 points in 18 career Calder Cup Playoff games.

Lyle will most likely start the 2023–24 season with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, with whom he’ll compete for playing time against the likes of Jeremie Poirier, Ilya Solovyov, Nick DeSimone, Yan Kuznetsov, and the recently-signed Colton Poolman.

The Flames have been relatively quiet in this year’s free agency period, re-signing Poolman, Dryden Hunt, and Martin Pospisil while also adding Lyle and Jordan Oesterle.
