Flames sign Matt Coronato to seven-year contract extension

The Calgary Flames have locked up a key part of their future as on Saturday the club announced that it has signed right winger Matt Coronato to a seven-year contract extension that carries a $6.5-million average annual average.

Through 77 appearances with the Flames this season, Coronato collected 24 goals and 23 assists to finish third in team scoring with 47 points. In all, through part of three seasons with Calgary totaling 112 career contests, Coronato has totaled 56 points counting 27 goals and 29 assists.

Beyond his time with the Flames, Coronato has also spent part of two seasons with the AHL affiliated Calgary Wranglers where through 43 total appearances he has registered 17 goals and 27 assists for 44 points.

Coronato was originally chosen 13th overall by the Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft.

A graduate of the NCAA’s Harvard Crimson, Coronato spent two seasons in the collegiate ranks from 2021-23. In his freshman campaign, Coronato was named the Ivy League’s Rookie of the Year after he finished with a team-leading 36 points counting 18 goals and 18 assists coming in 34 contests, while in his sophomore season he was named to the All Ivy League First Team after putting up another 36 points counting 20 goals and 16 assists across 34 appearances.

Prior to committing to Harvard, Coronato spent two seasons with the USHL’s Chicago Steel from 2019-21. In his second season, Coronato headlined the USHL with 48 goals and was named the Forward of the Year, all part of a campaign in which he helped the Steel capture the Clark Cup championship.

A 22-year-old native of Greenlawn, N.Y., Coronato has also seen success in international competition, including an appearance with the United States at the 2022 World Juniors where through five games he notched four goals and three assists to finish second in team scoring. Coronato also joined the United States at the 2023 IIHF World Championship where he tallied three goals and five assists for eight points in 10 games.
