Flames sign Nick Cicek to one-year, two-way deal

The Calgary Flames announced Tuesday the signing of defenseman Nick Cicek to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000

Cicek spent the 2024-25 campaign with the Mannheim Eagles in Germany’s top domestic league, scoring three goals and 14 assists for 17 points in 50 games. In 10 playoff games, he also had one goal and one assist for two points and 17 penalty minutes.

In the previous three seasons, Cicek spent the majority of it in the American Hockey League with the San Jose Barracuda and Abbotsford Canucks. In 157 regular-season games, he scored 10 goals and 34 assists for 44 points. Cicek also played in 16 regular-season games with the San Jose Sharks in 2022-23, recording four assists and 15 penalty minutes.

Cicek also spent four seasons with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, scoring nine goals and 39 assists for 48 points in 138 regular-season games. He also has two assists in five WHL playoff games.

The Flames went 41-27-14 with 96 points, fourth in the Pacific Division and falling just short of making the playoffs. Nazem Kadri led the team in goals and points, scoring 35 times to go along with his 32 assists for 67 points. Jonathan Huberdeau was second, finishing with 62 points through 28 goals and 34 assists. Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar led the team in assists with 39 while averaging a team-leading 24:10 of ice time.

Earlier in the day, the Flames signed defenseman Joel Hanley on a two-year contract worth $1.75 million per season. Hanley, 34, appeared in 53 games with the Flames during the 2024-25 regular season, collecting two goals and nine points while averaging a career-high 18:35 of ice time.
