Barrie, 33, was attending Flames’ training camp on a professional tryout agreement (PTO). The right-handed blueliner has done enough to impress GM Craig Conroy and company, and looks to take on a leadership role on the blueline of the re-tooling Flames.
Barrie spent the past season and a half with the Nashville Predators, where last year was made a healthy scratch for the first time in his career. The Victoria, BC native managed to dress in 41 games, scoring once and recording just 15 points. Losing his spot on the first power-play unit certainly had an impact on his production, as Barrie’s ice time declined from averaging 21:23 per game in 2022-23, to just over 18 minutes last season.
The two-way defenseman has been very open about his time in Nashville and how it impacted him, on and off the ice. Barrie spoke to the media recently in Calgary and admitted he has some things left to accomplish in this league. “I want to get to 1,000 games and try to win a Stanley Cup. If you want to stay in this league, you have to dedicate yourself and really put the work in and that’s what I did this summer. I’m just hoping to prove some people wrong and show that I have a lot of game left,” stated Barrie.
When asked about what went wrong in Nashville last season, Barrie didn’t shy away from the situation. “I was a healthy scratch for the first time in my career which I was a little surprised by,” he acknowledged. “That was something I didn’t agree with. The key was just talking through it and using some resources — whether it’s family or therapists — just to talk through what’s going on.”
Heading into the new season, Barrie projects to start on the Flames’ third defense pairing and should get a long look at running one of Calgary’s power-play units. The Flames close out their pre-season on Friday night when they face the Winnipeg Jets.
