The Calgary Flames have traded defenseman Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for defenseman Zach Whitecloud, defense prospect Abram Wiebe, a 2027 first-round pick, and a conditional 2027 second-round pick.

TSN’s Darren Dreger was the first to report that Andersson had been traded on Sunday afternoon. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman subsequently confirmed the details of the deal, reporting that the Flames had retained 50 percent of Andersson’s contract.

Andersson, 29, has 10 goals and 30 points in 48 games with the Flames this season. The Malmo, Sweden product is under contract through the end of the 2025-26 campaign at a $4.55 million NHL cap hit

A second-round pick (No. 53 overall) of the Flames in the 2015 NHL Draft, Andersson has spent his entire NHL career to date with the Flames. The 6’1″ right-handed defenseman is set to be an unrestricted free agent upon the conclusion of the 2025-26 season; Andersson has not agreed to an extension with Vegas.

Andersson played his final game as a member of the Flames on Saturday afternoon against the New York Islanders, finishing with one assist and a plus-two rating in 25:40 of ice time.

The Flames drafted Andersson from the OHL’s Barrie Colts, with whom he spent two seasons from 2014 to 2016. He turned pro in the Flames organization in the 2016-17 season, spending most of it with the AHL’s Stockton Heat but also making his NHL debut the same year.

Andersson emerged as a full-time NHL defenseman with the Flames in time for the 2018-19 season, skating primarily in a bottom-pairing role and helping the club win a Pacific Division title. His best year with the Flames was in 2021-22, in which he scored 50 points in the regular season before adding six more in 12 playoff games.

With Vegas, Andersson will reunite with former Flames teammate and defense partner Noah Hanifin. He’ll join a Pacific Division rival that currently leads that particular pack with a 24-11-12 record and 60 points in 47 games.

Through 584 career games with the Flames, Andersson has collected 57 goals and 261 points; he’s added seven goals and 14 points in 27 playoff contests.
