According to Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli, Cam Lawrence, an analytic consultant for the Columbus Blue Jackets, could be someone to watch for the Pittsburgh Penguins GM role.

Lawrence has previously worked for the Florida Panthers, and is the chief financial officer for wellness company GNC. He also lives in the Pittsburgh area.

Lawrence grew up in Vancouver and worked for various technology and biomedical businesses throughout his career. He previously wrote for CanucksArmy while putting a big focus on data analysis in hockey. He has acted as a team consultant from 2015-23, spending the past two years with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Penguins announced former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas as president of hockey operations on Thursday, just minutes before the Leafs were set to introduce new GM Brad Treliving. Pittsburgh’s parent company, the Fenway Sports Group, relieved former GM Ron Hextall and president of hockey operations Brian Burke, giving the team a clean slate heading into the summer after missing the playoffs.

June is a big month for the NHL, with the start of the buyout period, the NHL Draft and the lead-up to the start of free agency on July 1. The Penguins have around $20 million in projected cap space, according to CapFriendly, with Nick Bonino, Jason Zucker and Tristan Jarry being the most prominent free agents. Drew O’Connor and Ryan Poehling are both RFAs.

Other rumored candidates for the Penguins GM job include Mathieu Darche, an assistant GM with Tampa Bay; Tyler Dellow, the VP of hockey analytics in New Jersey; Jeff Greenberg, an associate GM with Chicago; and Alexandra Mandrycky, an assistant GM with Seattle. Dubas also has close ties with Jason Spezza, who also departed the Leafs, as well as current Toronto AGM Brandon Pridham, who has been linked to several other teams this offseason.
