Team Canada defenseman Josh Morrissey will miss Sunday’s game against Team France but has not been ruled out of the rest of the men’s hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Morrissey, 30, exited Thursday’s game against Team Czechia with an undisclosed injury and did not take part in Canada’s 5-1 win over Team Switzerland on Friday. Travis Sanheim made his Olympic debut against Switzerland in Morrissey’s absence.

Team Canada head coach Jon Cooper confirmed Morrissey’s status for the France game shortly after the Canadians wrapped up their second game of the preliminary round.

“Jon Cooper [says] Josh Morrissey won’t play next games vs. France but was clear in saying he’s not ruled out of the tournament,” TSN’s Pierre LeBrun tweeted after Friday’s game.

Morrissey logged just 7:10 of ice time in the early stages of Canada’s tournament-opening 5-0 win over the Czechs. The Calgary product is part of a group of left-handed defenders on Canada’s roster that also includes Devon Toews, Shea Theodore, Thomas Harley, and Sanheim.

Through 56 games with the Winnipeg Jets this season, Morrissey has collected 10 goals and 42 points while averaging 24:37 of ice time. He previously played three games for Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

The Jets originally selected Morrissey in the first round (No. 13 overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Jets in the 2015-16 season, having previously represented Canada at the 2014 and 2014 World Junior Championships.

Morrissey has spent his entire NHL career to date with the Jets and is signed through 2028 at a $6.25 million annual cap hit. He’s collected 90 goals and 415 points in 718 games over parts of 11 seasons; additionally, he’s racked up five goals and 20 points in 54 playoff games with the club.
