The Washington Capitals have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension with forward Ivan Miroshnichenko, according to the player’s representation at Gold Star Hockey.

Miroshnichenko, the team’s first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft at No. 20 overall, has yet to appear with the team at the NHL level so far this year.

The native of Ussuriysk, Russia has 18 career NHL games to his name, all last season, in which he scored a goal and added three assists for four points.

The winger has proven to be a productive force in the AHL, as he racked up 42 points on 23 goals and 19 assists in 53 games with the Hershey Bears last year. The season before, he was a member of Hershey’s run to the Calder Cup championship, scoring 7 goals in 20 playoff games after recording 25 points in 47 regular season appearances.

Miroshnichenko is in the last year of his entry-level contract that carries a cap hit of $950,000 at the NHL level. According to PuckPedia, his new deal comes with a $925,000 salary cap hit with signing bonuses of $50,000 in each year.

As of right now, the Capitals have just eight forwards signed to NHL contracts for next season. Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre are slated to be restricted free agents, and captain Alexander Ovechkin will be an unrestricted free agent with a decision to make about his future.

Miroshnichenko and his upside on a low-cost deal for the next two years will provide Washington’s front office with some valuable flexibility while they look to maintain their status as a competitive team in the East.

The Capitals are off to a solid 6-4-0 start to the season as they look to defend their Metropolitan Division win from a season ago. The Caps host the New York Islanders on Friday night for a 7:00 PM EST puckdrop.
