Hurricanes’ Seth Jarvis expected to return after eight-game absence with upper-body injury

The slumping Carolina Hurricanes are getting a big boost to their lineup on Tuesday, as forward Seth Jarvis is expected to return to the lineup for their game against the Dallas Stars.
Welcoming three Western Conference opponents to Lenovo Center this week, the #Canes are on the ice for morning skate before hosting the Stars tonight. Seth Jarvis (upper-body injury) appears set to return to the lineup for the first time since Dec. 19. He's working in a regular
Jarvis returns to the lineup after an eight-game absence with an upper-body injury. He originally was only given a timeline of “out for a while” by Canes head coach Rod Brind’Amour, so for him to be back in the lineup after only two-and-a-half weeks is great news for the Hurricanes, especially after the team went 3-5-0 during his absence.
Jarvis initially sustained the injury during the Hurricanes’ 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers on December 19th in a play where he drove the net with the puck. The combination of him losing balance while driving to the net and Evan Rodrigues trying to knock Jarvis off the puck caused him to go flying into the goal post, knocking the net off its’ moorings, with Jarvis then sliding into the boards. Jarvis immediately clutched his upper-body in pain and left the game, requiring assistance from the medical staff.
Jarvis is currently on injured reserve, so a roster move will need to be made in order to activate him for a return to the lineup. All of their currently-reported injured players are on IR as well, so another player will need to be sent down to the AHL. Unless that player is defenseman Joel Nystrom, they will need to go through waivers, as lineup mainstays Jackson Blake and Alexander Nikishin are the only other players exempt from waivers on their NHL roster.
Jarvis continues to take steps forward in his game and develop into a consistent scoring threat for the Hurricanes, as he has 19 goals and 10 assists for 29 points in 34 games this season. Had his season been fully healthy, he was on pace for a career-high 69 points.
Jarvis also missed out on Canada’s Olympic roster after joining the team for the 4 Nations Face-Off, which will serve as added motivation for him. He did confirm that Canada management told him to be on standby in the event of injuries, so there’s still a chance he finds himself on the roster.
Jarvis is currently slated to play on the Hurricanes’ third line alongside Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook. That trio has been outscored 1-0 and has a 47.78 5v5 expected goal share in 12:37 of ice time this season.
The Hurricanes currently sit in first place in the Metropolitan Division with a 25-14-3 record. They’ll look to build off of Sunday’s 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils when they host the Stars on Tuesday at 7 p.m. EST.
