Hurricanes’ Seth Jarvis on not making Canada’s Olympic team: ‘Sometimes you’ve got to eat a (explicit) sandwich’

Carolina Hurricanes’ forward Seth Jarvis spoke with reporters one day after Canada announced its initial roster for the Olympic men’s hockey tournament, with Jarvis not being named to the group.
Seth Jarvis, on Team Canada: “Saw a quote a few years ago: ‘Sometimes you’ve got to eat a shit sandwich. You chew on it a little bit, it doesn’t taste very good, but you move on.’ Weirdly enough, that kind of resonated with me.” He’s been put on standby in case of injury.
“(I) saw a quote a few years ago: ‘Sometimes you’ve got to eat a (explicit) sandwich. You chew on it a little bit, it doesn’t taste very good, but you move on,'” Jarvis said, referring to a quote from former NHLer Justin Williams during the 2019 Eastern Conference Final.
“Weirdly enough, that kind of resonated with me.”
Jarvis, 23, added that “it sucked” and it was a “huge blow” not making the initial selection list. However, he says he was told to be on standby in case of injuries.
“Obviously, it’s something I really worked for and wanted to achieve, but there’s nothing you can do about it now. I gave myself a couple of days to take it in, feel emotions, and now it’s just move past it and get ready for the season.”
Seth Jarvis also confirmed Hockey Canada told him to be on standby for the Olympic roster, in case of injuries. He said "it sucked" and was "a huge blow" to not make the initial selection list, before referencing a legendary Justin Williams quote from a few years ago.
Through 34 games in 2025-26, Jarvis has 19 goals and 10 assists for 29 points. Now in his fifth NHL campaign, he has 115 goals and 127 assists for 242 points in 338 regular-season games.
Jarvis also has 19 goals and 24 assists for 43 points in 55 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Last spring, he scored six goals and added 10 assists for 16 points in 15 games, helping the Hurricanes reach the Eastern Conference Final.
Taken No. 13 overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Jarvis spent parts of four seasons playing junior hockey with the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks. He scored 73 goals and added 93 assists for 166 points in 154 regular-season games.
His best season came in 2019-20, where in just 58 games, he posted 42 goals and 56 assists for 98 points.
