The New York Rangers have moved on from another defenseman, as they’ve dealt K’Andre Miller to the Carolina Hurricanes.

In return for Miller, the Rangers acquire a conditional first round pick, a second round pick and defenseman Scott Morrow.

Miller is a restricted free agent after the conclusion of his two-year contract with a $3.872 million cap hit, and does have arbitration rights. The deal will be a sign-and-trade to give Miller the eighth year with the Canes, and Miller will get a $7.5 million cap hit

With the deal, the Hurricanes add another blueliner as Brent Burns and Dmitry Orlov depart for free agency, and allowed them to fit him into their current defense corps with Jaccob Slavin, Sean Walker, Shayne Gostisbehere and Jalen Chatfield, and allows them to ease Alexander Nikishin and Scott Morrow into full time NHL roles.

For the Rangers, they continue to reshape their blueline, as now the only remaining defenseman from their top four to start the 2024-25 season is Adam Fox. With the Rangers signing Vladislav Gavrikov in free agency, it made Miller expendable, although they had been looking to deal the St. Paul, Minnesota product for most of the season as they didn’t want to commit to him long-term.

After seeing his game take a step back in 2023-24, Miller didn’t see his game rebound in 2024-25, as he had seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points in 74 games. It was on par with his performance in 2023-24, where he had 30 points in 80 games.

Morrow is a former 2021 second-round pick by the Canes, and had one goal and five assists for six points in 14 games with Carolina in 2024-25, along with no points in five playoff games. He also had 13 goals and 26 assists for 39 points in 52 games in the AHL, in addition to two playoff games where he was held pointless.

The Hurricanes have been busy so far this summer, retaining Taylor Hall, Frederik Andersen and Eric Robinson, and signing Logan Stankoven to an extension. They currently have almost $27 million in cap space before signing Miller, with six other minor league RFAs to sign.

The Rangers have made a couple moves as well, including the aforementioned Gavrikov signing and trading Chris Kreider to the Anaheim Ducks. They now have just over $6 million in cap space with six RFAs, including Will Cuylle.
