A huge change in operations in New England.

On Wednesday, the Boston Bruins announced that CEO Charlie Jacobs is going to take over as the team’s governor from his father, Jeremy M. Jacobs, who held the role for 51 years.

Charlie will represent the club on the NHL’s Board of Governors.

“It is a tremendous honor to step into the role as governor of the Boston Bruins,” the younger Jacobs said in a release. “Representing the team that has been part of my family for the past 51 years. I step into this role with the goal of continuing to build upon the incredible legacy and the impact that my dad has had on this franchise and the NHL over his five decades of leadership. Dad will continue to serve as my mentor and sounding board through this next era of the Bruins. I am looking forward to partnering with the NHL Board of Governors Chairman Ted Leonsis, Vice Chair Murray Edwards, our peers, and Commissioner Bettman on continuing to grow this beautiful game that we all love.”

The move to promote Charlie comes as Jeremy is starting to move out of the spotlight. Last month, he stepped down as Chairman of the league’s board of governors, and Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis was unanimously voted in as the new chair.

Charlie has been part of the organization since 2000, when he was named the Bruins’ alternate governor. He also serves as the CEO of Delaware North, a multinational food service and hospitality company, which has ownership shares of NESN, the Bruins’ local broadcaster.
