Blackhawks assign Laurent Brossoit to AHL for conditioning stint

A netminder, who has been out for a long time, is set to finally see some game action.
On Tuesday, the Chicago Blackhawks announced that goaltender Laurent Brossoit has been activated from the team’s injured, non-roster list and assigned to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, for a conditioning stint.

It has been a long road back to the ice for Brossoit. He hasn’t played a game since the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when he was a member of the Winnipeg Jets. He signed a two-year contract with Chicago in July 2024, with the deal carrying a cap hit of $3.3 million through the end of this season. However, he hasn’t had the chance to play for his new team.
In August 2024, he underwent surgery to repair his meniscus. Then, he had a follow-up arthroscopic surgery on his right knee a few months later, effectively knocking him out for the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign. This past September, Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson stated that the Port Alberni, B.C. native would remain out long-term after having hip surgery over the summer, putting his playing future in considerable doubt.
With Brossoit out of action, the Hawks have found success with the resurgence of Spencer Knight, who has helped rejuvenate the team in the Windy City and placed Chicago in playoff contention.
It wasn’t that long ago that Brossoit was considered one of the best No. 2 – or 1B – goaltenders in the league. During the 2022-23 season, with the goaltending carousel that was the Vegas Golden Knights, it was Brossoit who was the Game 1 starter. After vanquishing the Jets in the first round, an injury in Game 3 of the second round against the Edmonton Oilers knocked him out for the playoffs, as Adin Hills carried the team the rest of the way to its first Stanley Cup.
Brossoit has made 140 appearances in the NHL, posting a career record of 64-46-13, with a 2.64 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage and six shutouts. He’s 5-2 in 10 postseason games with a 3.13 GAA and a .890 SV%.
The IceHogs are scheduled to host the Colorado Eagles on Friday night.
