More injury problems for one of the game’s underrated netminders.

When speaking to the media on Thursday, Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson revealed that goaltender Laurent Brossoit had hip surgery this past offseason and is considered out long term.

It has not been an easy 13 months for the Port Alberni, B.C. native. Since signing a two-year deal with the Blackhawks in July 2024, he has yet to play a game for the team. After undergoing surgery to repair his meniscus last August, he had a follow-up arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in November of the 2024-25 season.

The issues led to Brossoit missing the entire 2024-25 season. Now, with this new development, his future in the NHL, let alone the Blackhawks, seems to be in doubt. He last appeared during the Winnipeg Jets’ first-round series against the Colorado Avalanche in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

With Brossoit on the shelf (again), the team will be riding Spencer Knight, fresh off signing a contract extension, and Arvid Soderblom to start the 2025-26 season.

It wasn’t that long ago that Brossoit was considered one of the best No. 2 – or 1B – goaltenders in the league. During the 2022-23 season, with the goaltending carousel that was the Vegas Golden Knights, it was Brossoit who was the Game 1 starter. After vanquishing the Jets in the first round, an injury in Game 3 of the second round against the Edmonton Oilers knocked him out for the playoffs, as Adin Hills carried the team the rest of the way to its first Stanley Cup.

Brossoit has made 140 appearances in the NHL, posting a career record of 64-46-13, with a 2.64 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage and six shutouts. He’s 5-2 in 10 postseason games with a 3.13 GAA and a .890 SV%.

Davidson revealed other injury news for the team as training camps are getting underway across the NHL. Prospective defender Ty Henry will be undergoing knee surgery soon, while forward AJ Spellacy suffered a shoulder injury, and will be out for 7-10 days. Boston University and Chicago draft pick Jack Pridham is listed as day-to-day with an infection.
