One of the top NHL prospects os showing that he can still do it on the gridiron.

On Thursday night, Chicago Blackhawks prospect Mason West had himself a night to start his senior season with Edina High School’s football team. With the Hornets, West threw four touchdowns against Hopkins in a 49-21 victory.

West was taken in the first round, 29th overall, by the Blackhawks in the 2025 NHL Draft. It was already known that the 18-year-old was going to play football in the fall before joining the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League later this season.

According to 247 Sports, West is a three-star recruit and is listed as the 13th-best quarterback in the state of Minnesota. While his athletic future is clearly on the ice, he has received offers from D-I football programs such as Kent State and Marshall. However, no schools that have shown interest in West have hockey programs.

His passion for the game is noticeable, not only because of his high draft stock, but also because he has committed to heading to East Lansing to join a strong program at Michigan State University.

On the Edina High School hockey team, West has helped bring prominence to the historically good program, helping the Hornets win the state championship as a sophomore in 2024, before being named to the All-Tournament Team last season.

Daily Faceoff draft expert Steven Ellis says West’s size makes him a force on the ice and a prospect worth keeping an eye on.

“He’s a 6-foot-6 center who loves to overpower defenders and beat opponents with skill,” Ellis wrote. “He spent most of the year playing high school hockey but then finished the season with some excellent performances with the USHL’s Fargo Force. Every time I watch him, he finds a way to get better. The upside is tremendous, and he doesn’t struggle with traits that some other big forwards can, including slower hands and feet.”
