Aidan McDonough of Northeastern University signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks, the team announced Monday afternoon.

McDonough captained the Huskies during his final collegiate season as Northeastern defeated Harvard in a shootout for Boston’s coveted Beanpot collegiate hockey title before bowing out to Providence in the Hockey East Tournament. He was originally drafted by Vancouver in 2019’s seventh round.

McDonough led Northeastern with 20 goals and 38 points in his first season as captain; his goal tally was good for joint-12th most in Division 1.

The 2022-2023 campaign was McDonough’s second-consecutive 20-goal season after a 25-goal effort in 2021-2022.

The Canucks will hope that McDonough’s 6’2 frame and eye for goal can help the team during a renewed playoff push during 2023-2024, which will be Rick Tocchet’s first full season on the Vancouver bench.

Despite trading captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders and veteran defenseman Luke Schenn to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin retained the services of J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser while bringing in puck-moving blueliner Filip Hronek from Detroit.

The moves (or lack thereof) and Allvin’s own words indicate that the Canucks are comfortable moving forward with a team built around young stars Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson, both of whom are posting career-best numbers.

The 28-32-5 Canucks will try to continue a four-game win streak against the Central Division-leading Dallas Stars at home on Tuesday night.
