Avalanche’s Cale Makar could fetch over $18 million AAV on next deal

With big-name players starting to receive big paydays, where does the top defenseman in the NHL sit with his future dollar amount?
Following the Minnesota Wild’s signing of forward Kirill Kaprizov to an eight-year contract with an NHL record $17 million AAV, many are wondering what that means for future contracts. While many are keeping a close eye on what happens with Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, who is entering the final season of his eight-year contract, there are a few other names that might sign for cap hits that some could only dream about a few years ago.
One of those talented assets is Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar. Arguably the best blueliner in the game, Makar has earned the right to receive a significant raise in the near future. The 26-year-old has two more years left on his current six-year contract, which has a cap hit of $9 million, and is eligible to sign an extension this coming July.
On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discuss how much Makar could be making in his next contract.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I think Makar is going to be Kaprizov-plus. I think Makar might be $17-18 million.
Carter Hutton: Yeah, he’s got to be right? The way this market is going and the way that the money is spent. He’s just the guy where I think, with Nathan MacKinnon, they obviously talk about taking a little bit less. Maybe he’s just making sure that him and MacKinnon, having to negotiate a deal where Nate can just take a touch more, because without those two, this team does not go. So, Makar has got to be licking his chops at home, knowing the way this market is rolling, knowing that he is the best defenseman on the planet and what he’s going to get paid.
I think you start to creep up into those numbers now…This is the new norm, right? I think there is an adjustment period. There is a wow factor, but this is the way the cap is going. This is the way that the structure is going, and these high-end guys are going to be able to call their shots and get what they need.
