A respectable veteran is going to be hanging around the Mile High City for at least another season.

On Thursday, the Colorado Avalanche announced that the team has signed goaltender Scott Wedgewood to a one-year contract extension. The deal will have a cap hit of $2.5 million for the 2026-27 season.

Wedgewood is currently in the final season of a two-year deal that he signed with the Nashville Predators in July 2024. That contract has an AAV of $1.5 million. A little less than a year ago, the Brampton, Ont. native was traded by the Predators to Colorado in exchange for Justus Annunen and a sixth-round pick.

In backing up Mackenzie Blackwood, Wedgewood helped the Avs turn things around after a sluggish start to their 2024-25 campaign, finishing third in the Central Division. However, the team’s run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs was brief, as Colorado fell to the Dallas Stars in a thrilling seven-game, first-round series.

The 33-year-old has had to come up big in the first month of the 2025-26 season. With Blackwood recovering from injury to start the new year, Wedgewood has taken the reins as the No. 1 netminder. The former New Jersey Devil has flourished in the role, going 10-1-2 thus far, being the first, and so far only, goaltender in the NHL to have hit double digits in victories. He also has a 2.26 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. Wedgewood is just five games away from matching the number of appearances he had all of last season.

Since losing to the Boston Bruins on Oct. 23, the team’s only regulation loss thus far, Wedgewood has won each of his past five starts, including posting a 36-save performance against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night.

In 168 games across eight NHL seasons, Wedgewood has a record of 72-55-26, with a 2.82 GAA, a .907 SV% and eight shutouts.

The Avalanche (11-1-5) are scheduled to host the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.
