Avalanche sign Taylor Makar to two-year extension
A promising forward is staying near the Mile High City for a couple more years.
On Monday, the Colorado Avalanche announced that the team has signed forward Taylor Makar to a two-year contract extension. The deal carries an NHL AAV of $875,000 through the 2027-28 season. The first year is a two-way deal with a minor-league salary of $225,000 and a guaranteed salary of $300,000. The second year is a one-way deal.

Makar is coming off his first full season in pro hockey, where he played under a one-year, entry-level contract with an NHL cap hit of $925,000 and an American Hockey League salary of $80,000. He spent most of the 2025-26 campaign with the Colorado Eagles, the Avalanche’s primary affiliate. In 52 regular-season appearances, he scored 14 goals and 10 assists for 24 points, good for sixth on the team in goals and tied for ninth in points. The 25-year-old added another two goals and six points in 17 Calder Cup Playoff games, as the Eagles made it all the way to the Western Conference Final, ultimately losing to the Chicago Wolves.
Makar had the chance to play alongside his older brother, Cale, several times this past year, as well. Taylor made his NHL debut on Nov. 1 against the San Jose Sharks, and played in 12 games between then and the Olympic break. He didn’t register a point, but had an even plus/minus while averaging 6:13 of ice time.
In 57 career regular-season games in the AHL, the Calgary native has 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points, with six points in 18 postseason contests.
Prior to turning pro, Makar was a solid secondary scorer in college, playing three years at Massachusetts before spending his senior year at Maine, where he scored a career-high 30 points in 38 contests.
