Avalanche trade Charlie Coyle, Miles Wood to Blue Jackets for Gavin Brindley, two draft picks

The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired center Charlie Coyle and left winger Miles Wood from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for center Gavin Brindley, a 2025 third-round pick, and a conditional 2027 second-round pick.
Through 83 games last season split between the Boston Bruins and Avalanche, Coyle totaled 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points coupled with 24 penalty minutes and a minus-nine mark. Coyle then added one goal in seven postseason appearances with the Avalanche.
In all, Coyle spent little time in Colorado. Ahead of the March trade deadline, Coyle was dealt from Boston to Colorado alongside a 2026 fifth-round selection in exchange for fellow forwards Casey Mittelstadt and Will Zellers plus a second-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Per PuckPedia, Coyle is set to enter the final year of a six-year contract that carries a $5.25-million average annual value.
Originally chosen 28th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2010 NHL Draft, Coyle has since seen 950 career contests with the Minnesota Wild, Bruins, and Avalanche in which he has compiled 189 goals and 296 assists for 485 points. The 33-year-old native of East Weymouth, Mass., has also added 53 points in 126 appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
For Wood, the 29-year-old Buffalo native has spent the past two seasons with the Avalanche. Limited to 37 games in 2024-25 due to an upper-body injury, Wood collected four goals and four assists for eight points. A veteran of 513 career contests with the New Jersey Devils and Avalanche, Wood has tallied 91 goals and 91 assists for 182 career points.
Wood has four years remaining on a six-year contract that carries a $2.5-million average annual value, according to PuckPedia.
A second-round selection from the 2023 NHL Draft, Brindley made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets in 2023-24, seeing a lone appearance. In 2024-25, Brindley saw 52 showings with the AHL affiliated Cleveland Monsters in which he collected six goals and 11 assists for 17 points. The 20-year-old product of Fort Myers, Fla., has one year remaining on his three-year, entry-level contract.
