Avalanche acquire Charlie Coyle from Bruins for Casey Mittelstadt, Will Zellers, pick

The Colorado Avalanche acquired center Charlie Coyle and a 2026 fifth-round pick from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forwards Casey Mittlestadt, Will Zellers and a 2025 second-round pick.

The first to report the trade was The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa.

Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco confirmed the return for the Bruins.

The 33-year-old Coyle has 15 goals and seven assists for 22 points in 64 regular-season games this season. Now in his 13th season, Coyle has scored 187 goals and 285 assists for 472 points in 931 career regular-season games with the Bruins and Minnesota Wild.

Coyle has also played 119 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Wild and Bruins, scoring 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points. He was part of the Bruins’ 2019 Stanley Cup Final run, scoring nine goals and seven assists for 16 points.

As for Mittlestadt, he was traded by the Buffalo Sabres to the Avalanche just prior to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. Mittelstadt made an immediate impact, scoring four goals and 10 points in 18 regular season games and another nine points in 11 postseason outings. Combined with his 47 points in Buffalo, it marked the season year in a row he had at least 50 points after putting up 59 in 2022-23.

Mittelstadt’s production has dropped this year, with just 11 goals and 34 points in 62 games. He’s on pace for fewer than 50, while having some less-than-desirable analytics. Hopefully, the trade could help spark Mittelstadt’s game and help him establish himself as a valuable middle-six center.

In 419 NHL regular season games over eight seasons, Mittelstadt has 77 goals and 230 points. He has another two years left on his current contract with an AAV of $5.75 million.
