Columbus Blue Jackets sign Carson Meyer to one-year contract

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Carson Meyer to a one-year contract worth $775,000 in the NHL, according to Aaron Portzline. The deal is two-way and carries a $190,000 minor league salary with $210,000 guaranteed.
Meyer played most of the 2022-23 season with the Cleveland Monsters in the AHL. He tallied nine goals and 26 points in 34 games played in what is probably the best season of his career. He also played 14 games for the Blue Jackets in a bottom-six role, scoring a lone assist. He averaged under 10 minutes of ice time per game and wasn’t given much of an opportunity to contribute offense during his stint in Columbus.
The 25-year-old winger was originally a sixth-round pick of the Blue Jackets in the 2017 NHL Draft. He was drafted after a 26-point campaign for Miami University (Ohio). The following season he took a big step back, scoring only 10 points in 34 games. However, a switch in universities yielded positive results. Over the next two seasons with Ohio State University, he scored 22 and 31 points, respectively.
Meyer made the jump to pro in 2020-21, but because of the COVID-19 shortened season as well as injuries he only played 26 games for the Monsters. However, he proved himself to be a quality professional player with nine goals and 20 points that year.
Meyer earned a full-time spot on the Monsters in the 2021-22 season, with 27 points in 57 games. He also played 13 NHL games, including scoring his first NHL goal. The Powell, Ohio native is a long-shot to ever becoming a full-time NHLer but he has the skill and work ethic to give it a run for the money.
In 27 NHL games for the Blue Jackets, Meyer has one goal and four points, along with 12 penalty minutes and a -2 rating.
