Blue Jackets’ Zach Werenski avoids serious injury after blocking shot from Troy Terry

According to The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski did not block any bones after blocking a shot by Anaheim Ducks forward Troy Terry and is considered day-to-day.
Werenski blocked a shot with his ankle and could be seen crawling towards the bench in pain late in the third period. The Ducks won the game 4-3, with Werenski registering an assist on Dmitri Voronkov’s power-play goal at 5:54 in the first period.
Zach Werenski had to leave the game late in the third period after blocking a shot with his ankle.
The Blue Jackets have just one game before the Holiday break, a 10:00 PM ET matchup with the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. The team won’t return until Dec. 28, meaning Werenski could have a few extra days to rest up before returning if deemed all good to do so.
Werenski has been incredible for the Blue Jackets this season, registering 14 goals and 40 points in 35 games. He’s tracking for 94 points, which would beat his previous best, set a year ago, of 82. The 28-year-old is one of the top defensemen in the NHL, and he should be in the running for the Norris Trophy once again this season.
Werenski has a 14-point advantage over the second-highest-scoring player on Columbus, Kirill Marchenko.
“I don’t think he’s properly rated by a lot of casual NHL fans who maybe don’t watch a lot of Columbus Blue Jackets games,” Daily Faceoff Live’s Tyler Yaremchuk said on Friday. “I think he is way, way, way closer to the Hughes’ and Makars’ of the world than a lot of people give him credit for.”
Heading into Sunday’s action, the Blue Jackets currently sit last in the Eastern Conference with 34 points. Despite that, they’re still firmly in the playoff hunt, sitting just seven points behind the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers for one of the two wild-card spots.
