The aesthetic of watching a “color rush brawl” wasn’t the only entertainment that came after the conclusion of the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings scrum.

In the Red Wings locker room, comedian Jeff Garlin snuck his way next to Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider, who found himself on the ice when the two teams came together after the Wings pulled out a 2-1 win at Madison Square Garden.

The discussion was regarding how the Original Six rivals emptied the benches after Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick took exception to Red Wings forward Mason Appleton shooting the puck into the empty net after the final buzzer, leading to a little rumble near center ice in Manhattan.

Only Quick and Appleton were handed out penalties, though there was plenty of grappling, pushing and shoving that commenced. Quick was given a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct, as well as a 10-minute misconduct, while Appleton was simply handed a 10-minute misconduct.

Garlin was asked about his thoughts on the kerfuffle after the game. He said that he wanted to get in on the action.

“I was trying to get over the glass to join the scrum,” Garlin joked. “I’m a scrummer.”

He poked fun at the youth of Seider, age 24, saying that he’s been “scrumming” for a long time.

“I’ve been scrumming before you were born. I’m a scrummer, that’s right.”

Garlin, known mostly for his work as a recurring character on popular TV shows Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Goldbergs, is a noted sports fan. A native Chicagoan, he’s a diehard Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. In The Goldbergs, with the show set in Philadelphia, his character, Murray Goldberg, is an avid Philadelphia Flyers fan.
