Daily Faceoff Live: Should the NHL produce a Netflix series

Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL player Colby Cohen discuss a way that the NHL could develop a Netflix-style documentary to go in-depth and unfiltered with players, staff and more.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Colby, I want to get your take on this for Garbage Time. I see you rocking the Roger Federer hat, I am all in right now on the ‘Breakpoint Series’ on Netflix. I know a lot of people who are into ‘Drive to Survive’ and I can’t wait for the golf one that’s going to come out. I think the NHL has got to take advantage of this, you see these sports growing massively and putting out documentaries giving fans a real inside look into the sport, not just current fans but it’s creating new fans because of the production. I think the NHL is making a huge mistake by not having something like this for people to look at. I’m not talking about a propaganda-style series you put out on NHL.com, I think fans of the game and those who don’t know enough about the NHL and are intrigued by it they’d be all in. There are some great characters and great stories in this sport and I think it’s a shame it’s not being told a little more in-depth and unfiltered.
Colby Cohen: I haven’t seen ‘Pointbreak’ but I know everyone and everybody loves it. Paul Stastny was texting me the other day about it because he’s a really big Federer and tennis fan himself and he told me their whole team and even guys who are not tennis fans are watching it. One thing my wife and I look forward to watching each year is ‘Hardknocks’ on HBO which is an in-depth look at the NFL. I’m with you I think doing something with Netflix or a big platform and putting out content. I know the Boston Bruins have done a nice job with ‘Behind the B’ and that gives a bit of a look behind the scenes, into the locker room, the equipment and everything that goes into being an NHL player. The Chicago Blackhawks have one out called ‘Next Shift’ and I think it’s awesome. You see Kyle Davidson, Norm Maciver, Luke Richardson, Jonathan Toews and all these guys sit down do interviews and talk true day-to-day operations. I’m with you, I think it’s really cool and you want to show people what the day-to-day life is like for NHL players.
