Daily Faceoff Live: Who’s earned the bigger contract, Bo Horvat or David Pastrnak?

On today’s episode of Daily Faceoff Live, host Frank Seravalli and Colby Cohen discuss whether Vancouver Canucks captain Bo Horvat deserves more money on his contract, or Boston Bruins star David Pastrnak.

Frank Seravalli: Let’s do This or That from a player’s perspective now. You look at two guys who are in their contract years and having phenomenal seasons. Who has earned themselves more money with their play on the ice, is it Bo Horvat or David Pastrnak?

Colby Cohen: When I first thought about this question, my initial reaction was David Pastrnak. Once I thought more about it, I think Pasta was going to get paid around $11 million maybe $12 million. Obviously, he’s had an incredible start to the season but I actually go over to Bo Horvat and I think his play is going to give him the bigger jump in what potentially could have been expected to what he’s actually going to get. He’s started at such an incredible pace, David Pastrnak has been doing this consistently, has he made himself a bit more money? Sure. But I think maybe 5-10% more for Pastrnak, but I think Horvat is at maybe 20-25% more based on his output this season. Not to mention he’s been doing this on a team that’s inconsistent and a team that hasn’t been all that good this season, yet he’s still putting up those numbers. While Pastrnak is arguably on the best team in the NHL.

Frank Seravalli: I never envisioned we would get to this point in mid-December and Bo Horvat would be sitting in a position with two more goals than David Pastrnak. I think for that reason alone you’ve hit the argument on the head that Pastrnak was always going to be paid and maybe he helped himself out a bit more with the start to the season but I’m going to go out and say Bo Horvat has earned himself somewhere between $10 million and $16 million with how well he has played. It may depend on how he closes out the year, how the trade deadline looks where he lands in a spot where he’s long-term or a rental, all of this is important. At this very moment, I think Bo Horvat has earned himself more.
