Daily Faceoff Morning Report — 03/23/22

The Daily Faceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.

We will highlight injuries that will affect today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.

Shesterkin in mini-slump as Devils top Rangers 7-4

Igor Shesterkin (G) allowed five goals on 24 shots and now has a .878 SV% and 4.03 GAA in his last five games (2-3-0). Shesterkin has allowed four or more goals in three of his last five games after having done that only three times in his first 37 games (28-6-3). The success of the Rangers this season has relied very heavily on strong goalkeeping as they have only managed to win two times in games where they have allowed more than three goals (2-12-1). Andrew Copp (C, LW, RW) made his debut for the Rangers and picked up two assists while playing over 17 minutes and getting used on the top powerplay unit.

The New Jersey Devils continue to be a very fun team to watch with offence from Yegor Sharangovich (C, LW, RW), Jesper Bratt (LW, RW), Nico Hischier (C), and Jack Hughes (C, LW) coming in waves. Sharangovich had two points (1G / 1A) and has 18 points (8G / 10A) in his last 18 games. Hischier had two assists to give him 20 points (9G / 11A) in his last 15 games. Bratt also had two assists to give him 19 points (7G / 12A) in his last 13 games. Hughes had two goals, including his 100th career point, and is leading the way with 21 points (8G / 13A) in his last 14 games.

Hurricanes snap losing streak

The Carolina Hurricane won for the first time in five games (1-3-1) and improved to 2-0 against the Tampa Bay Lightning this year with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday. Rookie Seth Jarvis (C, RW) had two assists in the victory and now has five points (2G / 3A) in his last five games while playing on the top line alongside Sebastian Aho (C) and Teuvo Teravainen (LW, RW). Jarvis has had several temporary stints on the top line this season, but his production of late is a positive step towards making it a permanent placement. With the loss, Tampa Bay has now lost five of their last seven games (2-5-0).

Guentzel, Crosby lead the way for Penguins

Jake Guentzel (LW, RW) scored two goals for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 5-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Guentzel has 31 goals on the season and has now eclipsed the 30-goal mark for the second time in his career, though it is worth noting that he has had an 82-game pace of 30 or more goals in five of his six seasons. Sidney Crosby (C) had three assists and has racked 30 points (11G / 19A) while being held pointless only twice in his last 20 games.

Quick goals seal fate for Oilers

Evander Kane (LW, RW) and Leon Draisaitl (C, LW) scored 43 seconds apart in the third period to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 lead but couldn’t hold on as the Dallas Stars responded with two quick goals of their own to eventually defeat the Oilers 5-3. Kailer Yamamoto (RW) scored again in the loss for the Oilers to give him 10 points (6G / 4A) in his last seven games. The loss for the Oilers marked the first time this season where they lost a game after scoring the opening goal (21-1-0).

Roope Hintz (C, LW) and Denis Gurianov (LW, RW) scored 24 seconds apart late in the third period to help the Stars get two crucial points in the standings. John Klingberg (D) had two assists in the game and ranks third among all defensemen with 10 points since March 6th (8GP / 3G / 7A). Tyler Seguin (C, RW) had two points (1G / 1A), including his 300th career goal, and has five points (2G / 3A) in his last five games.

Ehlers leading Jets as Knights continue their fall

Going into action on Tuesday, the Winnipeg Jets had lost eight of their last 15 games (7-6-2) and allowed three or more goals in all but one of those games. On Tuesday, Connor Hellebuyck (G) made 42 saves to win 4-0 over the Vegas Golden Knights. Nikolaj Ehlers (LW, RW) scored a goal for the fifth consecutive game and added an assist to give him 11 points (6G / 5A) in his 10 games since returning from injury. The Jets improved to 6-3-1 since Ehlers’ return to the lineup after having gone 7-9-3 in his absence.

The Golden Knights have now been shut out on back-to-back nights and have lost 12 of 18 games (6-11-1) since Jack Eichel (C) joined the team in February. They currently sit one point back of the Dallas Stars, who have four games in hand, for the final Wild Card position in the Western Conference. The Jets moved to two points back of the Golden Knights with two games in hand.

Big night for Byfield

Quinton Byfield (C) had the first multi-point game of his career and recorded three points (2G / 1A) for the Los Angeles Kings in a commanding 6-1 win over the red-hot Nashville Predators.

The Kings have received production through the lineup and are currently on a 12-6-1 run but one of the most regular contributors continues to be Trevor Moore (LW, RW), who had two points (1G / 1A) on Tuesday. Moore has 33 points (9G / 24A) in his last 33 games and the soon-to-be 27-year-old has already shattered career-highs in virtually every statistical category this season. Roman Josi (D) recorded an assist in the loss for the Predators to extend his point streak to 11 games (4G / 21A / 25PTS).

Top line stays hot for Islanders

Semyon Varlamov (G) made 24 saves for his first shutout of the season and helped the New York Islanders improve to 6-1-1 in their last eight games. Brock Nelson (C) had three assists to give him 14 points (8G / 7A) in his last 11 games and Anders Lee (LW) had two points (1G / 1A) to give him 13 points (10G / 3A) in his last nine games. Oddly enough the third member of that top line for the Islanders, Anthony Beauvillier (LW, RW), was held pointless for the fourth time in his last five games (0G / 1A).

Notable streaks

  • Brandon Saad (LW, RW) had two points (1G / 1A), including a highlight-reel goal, and now has six points (2G / 4A) in his last six games.
  • David Perron (LW, RW) had two points (1G / 1A) to give him goals in seven consecutive games and 17 points (13G / 4A) in his last 10 games.
  • Jacob Markstrom (G) allowed four goals on 38 shots and lost in regulation for the first time in nine games (6-1-2).
  • Kevin Hayes (C) had two assists and now has nine points (4G / 5A) in nine games since returning from injury.
