Daily Faceoff Morning Report — 04/07/22

The Daily Faceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.

We will highlight injuries that will affect today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.

Jets take another blow in playoff push

For the second consecutive night, a Detroit Red Wings goalie put on a clinic to win the game for their team. A day after Alex Nedeljkovic (G) made 47 saves on 50 shots in a 5-3 win over the Boston Bruins, Thomas Greiss (G) saved 32 of 33 shots in a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets. The win marks the first time the Red Wings have won consecutive times in 22 games (6-13-3). Dylan Larkin (C) has slowed down from his early-season production but with two assists on Wednesday, he has nine points (3G / 6A) in his last 10 games and 67 points (30G / 37A) in 66 games this year. Mark Scheifele (C) scored the lone goal for the Jets to give him 21 points (7G / 14A) in his last 15 games. The Jets have now lost three straight games and sit seven points behind the Dallas Stars, who have two games in hand, for the final Wild Card position.

Carlson leads Caps past Lightning

John Carlson (D) had four points (2G / 2A) as the Washington Capitals defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 and snapped a two-game losing streak. Carlson has 27 points (5G / 22A) in his last 26 games. Alex Ovechkin (LW) had two points (1G / 1A) and became the 21st player in NHL history to score 1,400 career points. Nikita Kucherov (RW) scored in the loss to extend his point streak to six games (3G / 8A / 11PTS). The Lightning have now lost three straight games and nine of their last 15 (6-8-1).

Husso wins fifth straight start

Ville Husso (G) saved 28 of 29 shots as the St. Louis Blues beat the Seattle Kraken 4-1. Husso has won each of his last five starts and has a .935 SV% in those games. Robert Thomas (C, RW) scored again for the Blues and, despite being known as a pass-first player, now has eight goals to go with 11 assists in his last 11 games (19PTS). Brayden Schenn had two assists to extend his point streak to six games (2G / 6A / 8PTS). Chris Driedger (G) has started four of the last five games for the Kraken and saved 32 of 35 shots in the loss on Wednesday. Despite a 2-2-0 record in those four games, Driedger has a .947 SV% in that span.

Canucks snap Golden Knights’ win-streak

The Vancouver Canucks defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in dominating fashion with a 5-1 victory. The loss sent a large blow to the Golden Knights’ playoff hopes and snapped their five-game winning streak. The win moved the Canucks to six points behind the Golden Knights, who are one point back of the Dallas Stars for the final Wild Card position. Elias Pettersson (C) led the way with four points (2G / 2A) and has really turned things around with 29 points (13G / 16A) in his last 22 games after having only 24 points (11G / 13A) in his first 46 games.

Robin Lehner (G) allowed five goals on 31 shots in the loss and, dating back to before his injury, has a .898 SV% in his last seven games (3-4-0).

Flames beat Ducks 4-2

Johnny Gaudreau (LW, RW) had another multi-point game (1G / 1A) to help the Calgary Flames defeat the Anaheim Ducks 4-2. Gaudreau has racked up 18 points (8G / 10A) in his last nine games and 97 points (35G / 62A) in 70 games on the season.

The Flames won their second consecutive game but, despite a 12-6-3 record, have not won three-straight games since mid-February. They will get the chance to rectify that stat on Thursday against the San Jose Sharks. Adam Henrique (C, LW) scored a goal and is one of very few Ducks players that have produced consistently of late, with 17 points (9G / 8A) in his last 19 games.
