Daily Faceoff Morning Report — 10/13/22

The Daily Faceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.
We will highlight injuries affecting today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.
Caufield and Canadiens stun Maple Leafs with late victory
Montreal shocked the hockey world as they topped the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 at home off a late goal (19 seconds left) from winger Josh Anderson. The Maple Leafs struck first in the opener as 2021-22 rookie standout Michael Bunting potted home his only shot of the game on a rebound from a TJ Brodie shot in the first period. Striking back would become the theme of the game as Cole Caufield erased two Maple Leaf leads with his two second-period goals as he scored his 24th goal in 38 games since Martin St. Louis took over as head coach of the Canadiens.

Nylander struck 40 seconds later on his game-high fifth shot on goal (Matthews, Caufield also 5 SOG) before ultimately watching Anderson close out the game just a minute and a half later. Matt Murray struggled in his first game as a Maple Leaf, allowing four goals on 23 shots (.826%) while getting beat consistently on his glove side.
Blue Jackets comfortably handled by Hurricanes, lose Patrick Laine
Blue Jackets Star left winger Patrick Laine got on the scoresheet early in the second period, sniping just 11 seconds into the second period to give the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, the early momentum would be short-lived as Laine left Wednesday’s game prematurely after a collision with Brett Pesce.

— CBJ Center (@CBJcenter) October 13, 2022Carolina answered with four straight goals from Seth Jarvis, Brady Skjei, Martin Necas and Andrei Svechnikov. Necas stood out as he was the only player with multiple points on either side, finishing with a goal and two assists. Goaltender Frederik Andersen continued his hot form after finishing second in Vezina voting in 2021-22, turning away 31 shots (.969%) on the way to his 36th win as a member of the Hurricanes.
Krejci returns to NHL with a vengeance as the Bruins easily handle the Capitals
Darcy Kuemper’s Capitals debut was ruined Wednesday as the Bruins scored four goals on 29 shots (.862 SV%) on the way to an easy 5-2 victory. Kuemper was opposed by Linus Ullmark, who made a statement with his 33-save (.943) win after being named the opening night starter over Jeremy Swayman. David Krejci had an incredibly impactful return after a year in Europe, scoring once and assisting on both a David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron goals in the first period. Krejci’s performance was overshadowed by Pastrnak’s four-point performance (1G / 3A), and he also led all skaters with six SOG. The Capitals struggled to create offence as Conor Sheary and Anthony Mantha scored the lone goals for Washington as their top-6 was held off the board all night.
Colorado’s Power-play shines as Stanley Cup defence begins
The Colorado Avalanche commemorated their Stanley Cup banner-raising ceremony with an easy 5-2 win Wednesday night. The Avalanche more than doubled Chicago’s shots as the game ended 35-17 in favour of the Avalanche. Alexander Georgiev looked solid in his first game with the Avalanche after being acquired in the offseason, turning aside 15 of 17 shots to earn the victory. Colorado’s scoring was fueled by a pair of power-play goals by Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichuskin. Mikko Rantanen led all scorers with four power-play helpers. Both Cale Makar and Nathan Mackinnon pitched in with two assists, and five Avalanche players ended the game with two or more points. The Blackhawks got their goal contributions from longtime captain Jonathan Toews and journeyman Max Domi, as no Chicago skater collected more than three shots.
McDavid starts season on a high note as hat-trick fuels Oilers come back victory over the Canucks
Vancouver came roaring out of the gates as Elias Pettersson, JT Miller, and Andrei Kuzmenko scored the first three goals of the Canadian battle Wednesday night. In true Oilers fashion, Edmonton responded with five straight goals, including a hat-trick and four points from Connor McDavid, alongside a three-point performance from Leon Draisaitl (1G / 2A).

Ducks top Kraken in high-scoring Overtime thriller

The Ducks were led between the pipes by a strong showing from veteran goaltender John Gibson who stopped 44 of 48 shots (.917) on the way to the victory. Terry was one of five Ducks to collect two-plus points as Dylan Strome (1G / 2A), Trevor Zegras (1G / 1A), John Klingberg (2A) and rookie Mason McTavish (2A) all enjoyed a great start to the 2022-23 season. Seattle’ offence looked much stronger than last season, as Calder Trophy hopeful Matty Beniers started the season with a two-point performance (1G / 1A). Oliver Bjorkstrand added a goal while leading all skaters with seven SOG followed by Andrea Burakovsky (5 SOG) who also scored his first of the season.
