Tavares’ hat trick helps Leafs top Flyers and end four-game skid

Ilya Samsonov stopped 23 of 25 shots Wednesday to win his fifth game of the season (5-2-0) and help the Maple Leafs beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 and end Toronto’s four-game losing streak. An inspiring performance from their captain John Tavares led the Maple Leafs. Tavares scored three goals (5,6,7) and added an assist to bring his season totals to 14 points (7G/7A) in 11 games.

Auston Matthews got the Leafs on the board in the first, scoring a goal in back-to-back games, which gives him four on the season. Morgan Reilly and Mitch Marner enjoyed multi-point efforts with two assists each in the win. Felix Sandstrom (0-3-0) failed to get out of the losers column for his third straight start, surrendering five goals on 44 shots (.886 SV%). Owen Tippett (2) and Joel Farabee (3) scored the Flyers’ goals, while Travis Konecny added two assists to go along with his 18 PIMs as things got chippy toward the end of the game.

Sabres score five in the third period to stun and double the Penguins in comeback performance

Eric Comrie won his second straight start Wednesday, stopping 18 of 21 shots (.857 SV%) as his Buffalo Sabres beat Pittsburgh 6-3 at home. Buffalo stunned Pittsburgh with five third-period goals, led by Victor Olofsson’s team-leading two goals (7,8) on three SOG. Tage Thompson followed up his six-point performance on Monday with a goal (7) and an assist as he picked up his eighth point of the week in two games. Rasmus Dahlin added two assists as he is now second in the NHL for points among defensemen with 14 (6G/8A). Owen Power and Jeff Skinner also both enjoyed two-assist performances. Casey DeSmith struggled as he continues to look for his first win of the season (0-3-1), allowing four goals on 31 shots (.871 SV%). Jason Zucker (2), Josh Archibald (3) and Jake Guentzel (5) scored the Penguins’ goals, while Evgeni Malkin had the lone multi-point performance with two assists.
