Schmid picks up first career win in relief as Devils top Senators in overtime

Akira Schmid won his first career NHL game after replacing Vitek Vanecek, who left with an injury, as the Devils topped the Senators in overtime. Nico Hischier continued his hot run of late, scoring the overtime winner with his team-leading eighth goal of the season as he moved to 16 points (8G/8A) through 13 games, with nine points in his last six games. Dougie Hamilton had Hischier tip his shot with 33 seconds left in OT as he picked up his 11th point (3G/8A) on the assist through 14 games this season. Jack Hughes picked up a pair of helpers as he is now up to a point-per-game with 14 points (4G/10A) in 14 games after starting the year with only four points through his first six. Anton Forberg allowed four goals on 40 shots (.900 SV%) as he lost his fifth straight start to move to 3-6-1 as the Senators continued to struggle. Shane Pinto continued his strong Calder campaign, picking up two goals (7,8) to increase his team lead in goals to eight.

Rangers score six third-period goals as they crush the Red Wings

Igor Shesterkin stopped 18 of 20 shots (.900 SV%) to improve to 7-2-2 on the year as New York scored six unanswered goals in the third period to shock the Red Wings 8-2. Adam Fox led all skaters with a goal (4) and three assists as he moved to third in defenseman scoring across the NHL with 16 points (4G/12A) in 15 games. Mika Zibanajed potted two goals (8,9) off a team-high five SOG as he now has 18 points (9G/9A) in 15 games as he continues his hot start. Barclay Goodrow got in on the scoring with three points as he had a goal (3) and two assists, and was joined by Filip Chytil, Alexis Lafreniere and Artemi Panarin as Rangers who finished who two assists. Chris Kreider and Jimmy Vesey were the other two New York players with multi-point efforts as each had a goal and an assist. All but six Rangers finished with a point. Ville Husso was hung out to dry, as he was left in for all eight goals stopping only 25 of 33 shots (.758 SV%) as he moved to 5-2-2 after the worst outing of his career.

Vejmelka shuts out Islanders as Arizona continues hot streak

Karel Vejmelka was perfect Thursday, stopping 24 of 24 shots to pick up his first shutout of the season and fourth straight win, moving to 5-3-1 as Arizona beat the New York Islanders 2-0. Travis Boyd (2) and Jamie McBain (2) scored in the third period, while Clayton Keller picked up a pair of assists to lead the Coyotes on the night. Ilya Sorokin played well but had no offensive help as he stopped 27 of 28 shots (.964 SV%), taking his first loss in six starts.

Ullmark picks up NHL-leading 10th win as Bruins top Flames at home

Linus Ullmark stopped 31 of 32 shots (.969 SV%) as he picked up his NHL-leading 10th win of the season as Boston beat Calgary 3-1. Charlie McAvoy returned early from offseason shoulder surgery and had an immediate impact as he scored (1) and added a team-high five hits across 19:18 TOI. David Pastrnak led all skaters with eight SOG and tallied a goal (9) and an assist to move to third in the NHL in points with 22 points (9G/13A) through 14 games. Dan Vladar played well in the loss allowing two goals on 27 shots (.926 SV%), moving to 1-3-0 on the season.

Eichel scores hat-trick in return to Buffalo

Jack Eichel scored three goals (7,8,9) and added an assist along with seven SOG as he made a huge impact in his return to Buffalo with his 19th point in 15 games as Vegas beat Buffalo 7-4. Logan Thompson stopped 31 of 35 shots (.886 SV%) to move to 8-2-0, continuing his strong Calder campaign, while Chandler Stephenson joined Eichel with four points as he picked up a goal and three assists to move to a point per game with 15 (6G/9A) in 15 games. Alex Pietrangelo also had a big game as he grabbed his first goal of the season and picked up his 12th assist with a three-point performance. Paul Cotter (1G/1A) and Nicholas Roy (2A) were the other two Vegas players to finish with multi-point performances. Eric Comrie struggled, picking up his third straight loss as he allowed six goals on 35 shots (.829 SV%) and moved to 4-6-0 through 10 starts. Tage Thompson added to his Sabres lead in goals and points by adding a pair of goals (9,10) to bring his season totals to 18 points (10G/8A) in 14 games. Rasmus Dahlin led all defensemen with seven SOG while adding an assist to move to fourth in points in the NHL among defensemen, as he now has 17 points (7G/10A) through 13 games this season.

Jenner helps Korpisalo pick up first win as Columbus tops Flyers at home but lose Werenski

Joonas Korpisalo stopped 32 of 34 (.941 SV%) to pick up his first win of the season as Columbus beat Philadelphia 5-2 at home Thursday. Boone Jenner led the Blue Jackets with two goals (3,4) off a team-high four SOG, while Johnny Gaudreau scored and added two assists to bring his early season totals to 12 points (6G/6A) in 13 games. Zach Werenski played only 6:03 TOI before leaving due to injury but managed to still pick up a goal and an assist. Post-game, head coach Brad Larsen said “it’s not going to be good at all,” so expect Werenski to be sidelined indefinitely. Carter Hart took his first regulation loss of the season to move to 6-1-2 after he allowed three goals on 27 shots (.889 SV%). Ivan Provorov was the best Flyers skater on the night, scoring a goal (1) and adding an assist as he led all Philadelphia skaters with four SOG from the back end.

Blues snap eight-game losing streak with a victory over Sharks

Jordan Binnington won his first game in six starts stopping 27 of 30 shots (.900 SV%) to snap the Blues’ eight-game losing streak as they beat San Jose 5-2 Thursday. The Blues spread out their scoring as Torey Krug (2), Jordan Kyrou (4), Brandon Saad (1), Calle Rosen (1) and Noel Acciari (2) each had goals in the win, with Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich each picking up a pair of assists. Kaapo Kahkonen continued his early season struggles as he allowed four goals on 32 shots (.875 SV%) to move to 1-4-1 with a .877 SV%. Timo Meier (6), Tomas Hertl (3) and Logan Couture (5) each had goals for the Sharks, while Erik Karlsson added a pair of assists with five SOG to move to 21 points (10G/11A) in 15 games and continue to lead all NHL defenseman in points.

Svechnikov’s hat trick leads to Carolina touchdown over Edmonton

Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 20 of 22 shots (.909 SV%) to earn his first win of the year in his season debut as he filled in for the injured Frederik Andersen as Carolina beat Edmonton 7-2. Andrei Svechnikov picked up his second hat trick of the season, as he now has 11 goals and 17 points in 14 games. Jordan Martinook and Jesper Fast each had a goal and an assist in the win, while Martin Necas added two assists to move to an impressive 19 points (7G/12A) in 14 games. Sebastian Aho also added two assists, giving him 17 points (7G/10A). Jack Campbell struggled again, allowing four or more goals for the fourth time in five games as he allowed seven goals on 32 shots (.781 SV%). Connor McDavid picked up the 21st point of his nine-game point streak with a goal and an assist as he continues to lead the NHL in points and at a ridiculous pace with 31 points (15G/16A) in 15 games.

O’Connor and Rantanen each score twice as Avalanche down the Predators

Alexander Georgiev moved to an impressive 7-1-1 record picking up the win Thursday, stopping 32 of 35 shots (.914 SV%) as Colorado beat Nashville easily 5-3. Mikko Rantanen led all Avalanche skaters with two goals (8,9) and an assist as he now sits on 19 points through 12 games this season. Logan O’Connor also scored two goals as he potted his fourth and fifth goals of the campaign, while Nathan Mackinnon built on his NHL lead in assists (18) by adding two assists to bring him to 21 points (3G/18A) in 12 games. Kevin Lankinen struggled as he gave Juuse Saros the night off, allowing five goals on 35 shots (.857 SV%), moving to 3-2-0 on the year. Nashville spread out their scoring as Eeli Tolvanen (2), Ryan Johansen (5) and Roman Josi (3) each had goals in the losing effort.

Quick stays hot as Kings top Blackhawks in low-scoring overtime thriller

Jonathan Quick continued his hot play, coming off a shutout his last time out with a 32 save (.969 SV%) 2-1 overtime victory over Chicago. Kevin Fiala scored with two seconds left in overtime as he picked up his fourth goal of the season and first in five games. Petr Mrazek returned from injury, having last played October 22nd and stopped 33 of 35 shots (.943 SV%) before ultimately taking the overtime loss.
