Devils extend historic win streak to 13
The New Jersey Devils’ historic win streak reached 13 games as Vitek Vanecek stopped 27 of 29 shots (.931 SV%) to move to 9-1-0 on the season as New Jersey topped Edmonton 5-2 at home. Nico Hischier led all skaters with three assists (11,12,13) as the Devils’ captain now has 22 points (9G/13A) through 18 games. Jack Hughes added to his impressive totals, picking up two assists (13,14) as he now has 11 points (4G/7A) in his last seven games. Jesper Bratt added to his team lead in points as he picked up a goal (8) and assist (16) to move to 11th in the NHL in points with 24 in 19 games. Dawson Mercer was the other stand-out performer picking up a goal (5) and an assist (5) in limited minutes, playing only 12:03 TOI. Stuart Skinner struggled against the league’s third-highest scoring team, allowing five goals on 28 shots (.821 SV%) in his worst start of the season, moving to 4-4-0 on the year. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (9) had one of the Oilers’ two goals off a team-high seven SOG. Leon Draisaitl (11) scored the other Oilers’ marker.
Flames hand the Flyers their seventh straight loss
Jacob Markstrom stopped 23 of 25 shots (.920 SV%) to move to 8-4-2 as Calgary handed Philadelphia their seventh consecutive loss. Jonathan Huberdeau continued to heat up as his first-period goal (3) was his fourth point (1G/3A) in the last five games. The Flames’ scoring was spread out evenly as Dillon Dube (2), Rasmus Andersson (2), Blake Coleman (3), and Trevor Lewis (4) each had goals in the win. Coleman was the lone Calgary player to finish with multiple points as he ended with a game-high three points (1G/2A) in his 400th career NHL game. Carter Hart took his sixth straight loss to move to 6-4-3 on the season after allowing three goals on 28 shots (.893 SV%). Tanner Laczynski was called up on Monday morning and got the Flyers on the board with the first goal of his NHL career while Joel Farabee (4) added the other Philadelphia goal.
Bruins beat Lightning for their seventh straight win
Linus Ullmark continued his Vezina Trophy-worthy season Monday, stopping 32 of 35 shots (.914 SV%) for his fifth straight victory to move to 13-1-0 on the season as Boston beat Tampa Bay 5-3. David Krejci was the Bruins’ offensive leader as he picked up a goal (6) and an assist (8) while playing his most TOI in nearly three weeks (17:57). Brad Marchand picked up his sixth goal of the season off a team-high seven SOG as he now has 15 points (6G/9A) in 11 games since returning from offseason surgery. Keeping to the theme of early returns, Charlie McAvoy continued his strong return from injury as well, as he picked up a pair of assists (7,8) to bring his early season totals to nine points (1G/8A) in six games. Jake DeBrusk was the other Bruins player with multiple points as he grabbed a pair of helpers (7,8) to continue his strong start to 2022-23. Andrei Vasilevskiy continued to search for his game, as he moved to 7-6-1 after allowing five goals on 29 shots (.793 SV%). The Lightning scoring was led by their middle-6 as Nick Paul picked up a pair of goals (7,8) while Patrick Maroon grabbed a pair of assists (3,4) for the losing side.
Morrissey seals Jets win in overtime
Josh Morrissey scored two minutes into overtime for his second goals on the night (2,3) as Winnipeg beat Carolina in overtime 4-3 Monday. David Rittich had a clean sheet going until late in the third period when the Hurricanes scored three unanswered goals with their goalie pulled to force overtime. On the night, he stopped 26 of 29 shots (.897 SV%) to pick up his third straight win and move to 3-1-0 on the season. Pierre-Luc Dubois led all skaters with three points (1G/2A) as he now has 16 points (8G/8A) in 17 games. Blake Wheeler enjoyed his first multi-point game of the year as he picked up two assists (7,8), while Mikey Eyssimont scored the first goal of his career. Pyotr Kochetkov struggled in the loss allowing four goals on 23 shots (.826 SV%) as he picked up his first regulation loss of the season, moving to 2-1-1. Andrei Svechnikov snapped a two-game pointless streak by adding a goal (13) and an assist (7), as he now has 20 points through 19 games. Sebastian Aho led all skaters with three assists (11,12,13) as he currently holds the Hurricanes’ lead in points with 22 through 19 games.
Islanders complete comeback with OT win in Toronto
Ilya Sorokin stopped 30 of 32 shots (.938 SV%) to continue his strong season, moving to 8-5-0 as the Islanders came back to beat Toronto 3-2 on the road. Anthony Beauvillier scored (4) two minutes into overtime to secure the win, while Josh Bailey scored in the third period (4) to tie the game. Noah Dobson led all skaters with a goal (6) and an assist (8) as the 22-year-old now ranks 12th in the NHL among defensemen with 14 points in 20 games played. Erik Kallgren’s struggles continued as he moved to 2-2-4 after allowing three goals on 24 shots (.875 SV%). John Tavares picked up his team-leading 11th goal on the powerplay while Auston Matthews extended his point streak to five games (3G/4A) with a goal (9) and three SOG in the loss.
Binnington stands tall for seventh straight Blues win
Jordan Binnington stopped 27 of 28 shots (.964 SV%) to win his sixth (9-5-0) and the Blues’ seventh straight game as St.Louis topped Anaheim 3-1 at home. Noel Acciari led the Blues’ offence with two goals (4,5), while Justin Faulk (4) scored the other St. Louis marker on the powerplay. John Gibson added to his NHL lead in losses by moving to 3-11-1 after allowing two goals on 26 shots (.923 SV%). Cam Fowler was the Ducks’ only piece of offence with one goal (2) across 25:23 TOI.
Makar makes history in Colorado’s shootout win
Cale Makar historically scored (5) ten minutes into the first period to become the fastest defenseman in NHL history to reach 200 points (195 GP) as Colorado beat Dallas 3-2 in a shootout. Alexandar Georgiev continued his incredible start to his Avalanche tenure, stopping 22 of 24 shots (.917 SV%) to pick up his fifth win in six starts and move to a 9-2-1 record. Alex Newhook (4) scored the other Colorado goal, as he now has points in three straight games (2G/1A). Jake Oettinger was incredible yet again, as he was the unfortunate loser after allowing just two goals on 35 shots (.943 SV%) to move 7-2-2 on the year. Jason Robertson accounted for the entire Dallas offence as he scored both goals (13,14) and added a game-high seven SOG as he now ranks third in the NHL in points with 29 (14G/15A) through 19 games.
Sharks hand struggling Senators third loss in four games
Kaapo Kahkonen had his best start of the 2022-23 season, stopping 37 of 38 shots (.974 SV%) to move to 2-4-1 as San Jose crushed Ottawa 5-1. The Sharks spread out their scoring as Noah Gregor (1), Timo Meier (9), Matt Nieto (4), Tomas Hertl (5) and Logan Couture (10) all scored in the win. Luke Kunin led all skaters with three assists (5,6,7), while Erik Karlsson added to his league lead in points for a defenseman with his second period assist bringing him to 29 points (11G/18A) in 21 games. Cam Talbot was pulled after allowing three goals on seven shots (.571 SV%) before taking the eventual loss (1-4-0) in his worst start since joining the Senators. Tim Stützle had the lone Senators’ goal (7) as he stayed hot of late, having 11 points (6G/5A) in his last nine games.
Saros wins fourth in five starts as Nashville inches by Arizona
Juuse Saros stopped 24 of 27 shots (.889 SV%), and all three shootout attempts to move to 7-6-2 as Nashville beat Arizona 4-3 in a shootout. Nashville’s powerplay was the key to their success as Mikael Granlund picked up a powerplay goal (2) and assist (13), followed by Roman Josi picking up his ninth point (2G/7A) in his last six games with a powerplay goal (4) and assist (12). Connor Ingram had his best start of the season, stopping 42 of 45 shots (.933 SV%) while picking up his third straight loss to move to 1-4-1. Nick Schmaltz had a promising return after missing 15 games due to a rib injury, leading the Coyotes with five SOG across 18:56 TOI. Nick Bjustad was surprisingly the Coyotes’ offensive leader on the night, scoring a goal (2) and adding two assists (4,5) to snap a six-game scoreless streak.
Golden Knights add to Pacific Division lead with high-scoring win over Canucks
Logan Thompson stopped 25 of 29 shots (.862 SV%) as he allowed four goals for the third time in his last seven starts but moved to 10-3-0 as Vegas beat Vancouver 5-4 Monday. William Carrier led the Vegas offence with two goals (5,6), while Alex Pietrangelo moved to third in the NHL for defenseman scoring after potting a goal (3) and adding two assists (16,17) to bring his season totals to 20 points in 20 games. Jack Eichel added to his team lead in points with two assists (13,14) as he is now tied for 11th in the NHL in scoring with 24 points (10G/14A). Mark Stone also enjoyed a multi-point effort as he picked up a goal (8) and an assist (9) to bring his recent point streak to three games (4G/1A). Thatcher Demko’s nightmarish season continued as he’s now 2-9-2 after allowing five goals on 38 shots (.868 SV%). He has now allowed four or more goals in eight of his 13 starts this season. Andrei Kuzmenko had two points for a second straight contest after he picked up a goal (8) and an assist (7) off a team-high four SOG. Quinn Hughes was the other Canuck skater to finish with multiple points as he picked up a pair of assists (17,18) to move to 18 points in his first 15 games played. Bo Horvat moved to second in the NHL in goals when he scored his 15th of the season early in the third period.
