Welcome to the Daily Faceoff Morning Report brought to you by NHL Odds site Betway!
The Daily Faceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.
We will highlight injuries affecting today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.
Senators’ PP propels them to third straight win
Despite missing their two top centres (Josh Norris and Tim Stützle), the Senators were able to win their third straight game on Wednesday. Following a scoreless first period, Shane Pinto opened the scoring just 1:28 into the second period with his 10th of the year. The Senators’ sixth-ranked power-play (27.4%) then went to work, with Drake Batherson (1G / 1A), Brady Tkachuk (1G / 1A), and Alex DeBrincat (3A) doing all of the damage.

The Canadiens made a late push with two third-period goals from Kirby Dach and Christian Dvorak, but they could not get the game back on level terms. Cam Talbot stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced, giving him a three-game winning streak and moving him to 6-2-0 with a .923 SV% in his last eight starts.
Red Wings scoring woes continue in Minnesota
The Red Wings were already extremely banged up heading into Wednesday’s game and added Filip Hronek to the list in the first period. Hronek was crushed in open ice by Ryan Reaves and had to leave the game in concussion protocol.

— CJ Fogler AKA Perc70 #BlackLivesMatter (@cjzero) December 15, 2022Hornek reportedly wanted to return to the game, so it sounds like he won’t miss an extended period of time. Frederick Gaudreau opened the scoring and capped the game with an empty net, giving him seven goals on the season. Elmer Soderblom scored the only tally for the Red Wings in an extremely low-event hockey game. It was an easy night for Filip Gustavsson, who had to make just 16 stops to earn the win. He’s now won five in a row while posting a stellar .948 SV% over that stretch.
Flames fall to Canucks in a shootout for their fourth straight loss
Unsurprisingly, Bo Horvat started the scoring on Wednesday, notching his 21st goal of the season just 1:14 into the game. Conor Garland would double their lead just 34 seconds later.

The rest of the game was controlled mainly by the Flames, who outshot the Canucks 38-to-27 on the night. Calgary would eventually take a 3-2 lead in the second period, only for Sheldon Dries to tie it 100 seconds later. The Canucks would go on to win in a shootout, handing the Flames their fourth consecutive loss and snapping their three-game home winning streak. After getting shelled in his previous three outings, Spencer Martin stopped 35 of 38 shots (.921 SV%) for his ninth victory of the campaign.
