Daily NHL Betting Guide – 01/23/23

Welcome to our Betting Guide brought to you by NHL Betting site Betway!

Getting a little skin in the game can make watching NHL hockey even more exciting.

During the 2022-23 season, Daily Faceoff will help you become an improved bettor thanks to this betting model and our betting tools.

NHL MODEL PICKS

Each day we will look at each game, the Sportsbook Odds (via Betway), and the odds of each team winning based on the model created by Philip Bulsink. Based on those two numbers, we can quickly identify which teams we need to bet on, which teams to avoid and which lines to keep an eye on throughout the day.

You can quickly determine which teams are the best bets by following this simple table:

I will also provide some analysis on the best bets and update this post throughout the day to point out big injury news, lineup changes, and backup goalies starting.

The number to keep an eye on is the “Diff.” which is the percentage difference between the model’s projected Win% and the projected Win% based on Betway odds. To find out how odds turn into percentages, use our Odds Calculator.

Recommended Bets 💰

New York Islanders (@ TOR) ML +202

The Islanders don’t come in playing their best hockey, having lost eight of their last nine (1-5-3) while being outscored 30 to 15 (3.3 to 1.7 per game). Still, whenever Ilya Sorokin gets the nod, the Islanders have a chance to win. They’re definitely searching for offence at the moment, but the model thinks the +202 line is a bit extreme. During the Islanders’ skid, Sorokin has still posted a .916 SV% while going 1-3-3 in his last seven starts. Toronto has lost three of their last five, including losses to the Red Wings and Canadiens, so they’re definitely beatable, especially if Matt Murray gets the start–he is 2-2-0 with an .883 SV% in his last five outings.

Columbus Blue Jackets (@ CGY) +300

Similar to the Islanders, the Blue Jackets aren’t playing well as of late, but are coming off of a much-needed win over the Sharks on Saturday. We’ve also already seen them beat the Flames this season and tonight will be Johnny Gaudreau’s return to Calgary. I’m sure Gaudreau didn’t envision going back to Calgary as +300 underdogs, but that’s the case. The model has Columbus at +225, so there’s a lot of value on this extreme line.
