Daily NHL betting guide: January 14

Getting a little skin in the game can make watching NHL hockey even more exciting.

During the 2021-22 season, Daily Faceoff will help you become an improved bettor thanks to this betting model and our betting tools.

NHL MODEL PICKS

Each day we will look at each game, the Sportsbook Odds (via PointsBet), and the odds of each team winning based on the model created by Philip Bulsink. Based on those two numbers, we can quickly identify which teams we need to bet on, which teams to avoid and which lines to keep an eye on throughout the day.

You can quickly determine which teams are the best bets by following this simple table:

All “Recommended Bets” are 1 unit wagers.

I will also provide some analysis on the best bets and update this post throughout the day to point out big injury news, lineup changes, and backup goalies starting.

The number to keep an eye on is the “Diff.” which is the percentage difference between the model’s projected Win% and the projected Win% based on PointsBet odds. To find out how odds turn into percentages, use our Odds Calculator.

Model’s Picks

The model is not suggesting any bets on tonight’s three-game slate so here is a bonus prop bet:

Nathan MacKinnon Over 4.5 shots (-136)

If there’s one player in the NHL that is close to a lock for five-plus shots, it’s MacKinnon. He has fired five or more shots in 10 of his last 12 games, averaging 6.1 shots per game over that span.

The Avalanche are absurdly massive favourites tonight (-577), so MacKinnon should have plenty of chances in the offensive zone. He has not seen the Coyotes yet this season, but he averaged 4.7 shots per game in seven meetings a season ago.

Tyler Yaremchuk’s Picks

Game Pick

Minnesota in regulation vs Anaheim (+100)

Alright, I’m on a cold streak right now and I’m putting my trust in the Minnesota Wild to get me out of it. The Wild are on a two-game winning streak and tonight, they’re hosting a Ducks squad that has lost back-to-back games. Minnesota has been great in its own rink this season as well, winning 11 of its 14 games. The Ducks are just 7-7-3 on the road.

Prop Pick

Sam Reinhart over 0.5 assists vs. Dallas (+145)

Mathew Barzal picked up a goal last game but didn’t get us the assist we needed. It’s a shame. I’m going right back to the assist props tonight and I’m rolling with Sam Reinhart. It pays a very nice +145, which is a solid payout considering he’s hit this number in four of his last five games. He’s playing on the Panthers’ top line with Barkov and he’s on their top power-play unit, so he’ll have plenty of chances to get an apple.
