Daily NHL betting guide: January 23

Getting a little skin in the game can make watching NHL hockey even more exciting.

During the 2021-22 season, Daily Faceoff will help you become an improved bettor thanks to this betting model and our betting tools.

NHL MODEL PICKS

Each day we will look at each game, the Sportsbook Odds (via PointsBet), and the odds of each team winning based on the model created by Philip Bulsink. Based on those two numbers, we can quickly identify which teams we need to bet on, which teams to avoid and which lines to keep an eye on throughout the day.

You can quickly determine which teams are the best bets by following this simple table:

All “Recommended Bets” are 1 unit wagers.

I will also provide some analysis on the best bets and update this post throughout the day to point out big injury news, lineup changes, and backup goalies starting.

The number to keep an eye on is the “Diff.” which is the percentage difference between the model’s projected Win% and the projected Win% based on PointsBet odds. To find out how odds turn into percentages, use our Odds Calculator.

Model’s Picks

The model is not suggesting any picks at the current odds but there are a few gams worth monitoring throughout the day.

Lines to Watch 👀

Winnipeg Jets (@ PIT)

The Jets are already pretty sizeable road underdogs, so it remains to be seen how much that line will move towards Pittsburgh prior to the 1 PM ET puck-drop. However, if it gets to the point where Winnipeg is +228, the model sees enough value in that spot to recommend a bet.

The one caveat would be that Connor Hellebuyck needs to start for the second straight day for me to consider it. Eric Comrie is out of COVID-19 protocol but hasn’t played since December 10th and Mikhail Berdin has never played in an NHL game before.

Florida Panthers (@ SEA)

The model is very close to recommending a bet on Florida, who are massive -249 road favourites. If some money comes in on the home team, since it’s Florida’s fourth game in six days or because Sam Bennett is out again, and the line gets to FLA -232, then the model would see enough value for a bet.
