Daily NHL betting guide: January 31

Getting a little skin in the game can make watching NHL hockey even more exciting.
During the 2021-22 season, Daily Faceoff will help you become an improved bettor thanks to this betting model and our betting tools.
NHL MODEL PICKS
Each day we will look at each game, the Sportsbook Odds (via PointsBet), and the odds of each team winning based on the model created by Philip Bulsink. Based on those two numbers, we can quickly identify which teams we need to bet on, which teams to avoid and which lines to keep an eye on throughout the day.
You can quickly determine which teams are the best bets by following this simple table:

All “Recommended Bets” are 1 unit wagers.
I will also provide some analysis on the best bets and update this post throughout the day to point out big injury news, lineup changes, and backup goalies starting.
The number to keep an eye on is the “Diff.” which is the percentage difference between the model’s projected Win% and the projected Win% based on PointsBet odds. To find out how odds turn into percentages, use our Odds Calculator.

Proceed with Caution ⚠️
Ottawa Senators (vs. EDM)
You have to give the Senators credit, they are playing well despite missing a few key bodies; however, they’re struggling to score goals. They’ve been held to two-or-fewer goals in five of their last seven games and they’re going to need to score to keep pace with Connor McDavid and Co. tonight. If Josh Norris and Drake Batherson were in the lineup, they would definitely have value at +171. But without them, it’s hard to envision them scoring enough, even vs. Mikko Koskinen.
Bonus Player Prop
Aleksander Barkov to score a goal (+131)
Since the start of Dec., Barkov has scored 11 goals in 17 games. On Monday, the Panthers will start with Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau on the same line. Huberdeau leads the NHL in assists, so this certainly boosts Barkov’s chances of scoring. It’s also worth noting that Columbus is on the tail-end of a back-to-back and have been giving up goals at an alarming rate. In their last 17 games, their opponents have averaged 4.1 goals per game.
Barkov Over 0.5 Goals (+131)

Game Pick
Toronto Maple Leafs Puck Line vs. New Jersey Devils (-130)
The New Jersey Devils are struggling right now. They lost four in a row and have just three wins in 11 games so far this month. The Leafs, on the other hand, are 7-2-1 (covered in four of those wins) this month and are 15-4-1 on home ice this season. They’ll also have Jack Campbell between the pipes tonight. I like them to roll at home tonight.
I’m also taking the Oilers on the Puck Line at +125 against Ottawa.
Prop Pick
Aleksander Barkov assist at Columbus Blue Jackets (-115)
The Panthers’ offense is not really showing any signs of slowing down. Barkov has an assist in six of his last 10 games and I think he can pick one up tonight against the Blue Jackets. Columbus has allowed the second-most goals per game in the league so far this month, while the Panthers have scored the most this month. Barkov should be able to get a helper.
