Daily NHL betting guide: January 5

Getting a little skin in the game can make watching NHL hockey even more exciting.
During the 2021-22 season, Daily Faceoff will help you become an improved bettor thanks to this betting model and our betting tools.
NHL MODEL PICKS
Each day we will look at each game, the Sportsbook Odds (via PointsBet), and the odds of each team winning based on the model created by Philip Bulsink. Based on those two numbers, we can quickly identify which teams we need to bet on, which teams to avoid and which lines to keep an eye on throughout the day.
You can quickly determine which teams are the best bets by following this simple table:

All “Recommended Bets” are 1 unit wagers.
I will also provide some analysis on the best bets and update this post throughout the day to point out big injury news, lineup changes, and backup goalies starting.
The number to keep an eye on is the “Diff.” which is the percentage difference between the model’s projected Win% and the projected Win% based on PointsBet odds. To find out how odds turn into percentages, use our Odds Calculator.

Edmonton Oilers (@ TOR)
Unfortunately, the only bet that the model recommends tonight is the Oilers at +246 in Toronto. The problem is that it barely recommends them at +246 and the only reason the line has stretched out so far is that the Oilers will be without Connor McDavid, Tyson Barrie and Derek Ryan. On top of that, they are in the middle of a terrible stretch, losing 10 of their last 12 (2-8-2).
This is an easy fade tonight. But I’ll give you a bonus Prop Bet to consider…
Leon Draisaitl – Over 3.5 Shots On Goal (+101)
With McDavid out, Draisaitl is poised to play massive minutes on Wednesday. With only Ryan McLeod, Devin Shore and Colton Sceviour behind him, Draisaitl will likely play close to 25 minutes. He’s already averaging 3.24 shots per game this season, so it’s not outlandish to expect him to surpass that total with some extra playing time.
1 Unit Bet: Draisaitl OV 3.5 SOG (+101)

Game Pick
St. Louis Blues Money Line vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (+120)
The Penguins have won eight in a row and I think that streak comes to an end tonight. The Blues are coming off an exciting win over the Wild in the Winter Classic and have won both of their games since coming back from the break. A potential Tristan Jarry start does make me a little bit nervous since he’s gone five straight starts without allowing more than two goals, but I still like the Blues here as long as Jordan Binnington gets the nod between the pipes.
Prop Pick
Jordan Kyrou over 0.5 assists vs. PIT (+140)
Kyrou is enjoying a strong season and right now he is red hot. He has seven points in his last two games and four of those are assists. He’s scooped up an apple in five of his last ten and I think +140 is just too good to pass up tonight. I like Kyrou to stay hot.
