Daily NHL betting guide: January 8

Getting a little skin in the game can make watching NHL hockey even more exciting.

During the 2021-22 season, Daily Faceoff will help you become an improved bettor thanks to this betting model and our betting tools.

NHL MODEL PICKS

Each day we will look at each game, the Sportsbook Odds (via PointsBet), and the odds of each team winning based on the model created by Philip Bulsink. Based on those two numbers, we can quickly identify which teams we need to bet on, which teams to avoid and which lines to keep an eye on throughout the day.

You can quickly determine which teams are the best bets by following this simple table:

All “Recommended Bets” are 1 unit wagers.

I will also provide some analysis on the best bets and update this post throughout the day to point out big injury news, lineup changes, and backup goalies starting.

The number to keep an eye on is the “Diff.” which is the percentage difference between the model’s projected Win% and the projected Win% based on PointsBet odds. To find out how odds turn into percentages, use our Odds Calculator.

Recommended Bets

Carolina Hurricanes (vs. FLA)

This should be one of the better games on tonight’s slate. It’s a bit of a tough spot of the Hurricanes, coming in on the tail-end of a back-to-back but the model seems adamant that they should win this game. The model views them as -157 favourites when with the back-to-back they are -107 in the sportsbooks. The Panthers are still going to be missing Sam Bennet (suspension) and could be without Sam Reinhart and Mason Marchment (COVID-19 protocol) as well. If Reinhart and Marchment are still out, I say this is a go!

1 Unit Bet: CAR -107 (if Reinhart and Marchment remain in COVID-19 protocol)

Proceed with Caution ⚠️

Philadelphia Flyers (vs. SJS)

Both of these teams are pretty banged up right now but no one on tonight’s slate is missing as many players as the Flyers. Check out their Line Combos page and you’ll see why I’m telling you to stay away from the Flyers tonight.

Minnesota Wild (vs. WSH)

The Wild came through for us in Boston on Thursday but they lost Kirill Kaprizov and Jonas Brodin in the process. That makes them a much riskier bet tonight, even if Matthew Boldy and Marco Rossi step up in Kaprizov’s absence.

BONUS PLAYER PROP

Filip Forsberg to score a goal +158

Forsberg has been on an absolute heater since coming out of the Christmas break, scoring goals in four of five games and totalling five goals on 15 shots in that stretch. Tonight he faces an Arizona team that has the seventh-highest xGA/60 on the season and fourth-highest since Boxing Day. At +158, you’re getting a nice payout on Forsberg scoring his 19th of the season.

1 Unit Bet: Forsberg Ov 0.5 Goals +158

Game Pick

Rangers Money Line vs Anaheim (-121)

The Rangers are coming off a loss to the Golden Knights, but prior to that had won three in a row. The Ducks on the other hand have just one win in their four games since returning from their break. New York has also been a very solid road team this year, going 12-6-2 away from Madison Square Garden. I like the Rangers to take this one.

Prop Pick

Filip Forsberg over 0.5 assists (+160)

The Predators are in a great spot tonight going up against an Arizona team that has allowed 14 regulation goals since returning from the COVID break. Filip Forsberg has picked up an assist in two of his last three games and six of his last ten. I like him to scoop up an apple tonight.
