Senators vs Canucks | OddsShark Matchup Report

Opening NHL Odds: Canucks -150 Favorites

Vancouver will look to end a two-game skid in the first of three consecutive home matchups with Ottawa on Monday. The Canucks have been the worst defensive team in the NHL so far this season, surrendering a league-worst 4.80 goals per game with the goaltending tandem of veteran Braden Holtby (2-2, 3.70 goals-against average) and 25-year-old Thatcher Demko (0-3, 5.47). They also lead the NHL with 123 penalty minutes against, which has hurt the team immensely as well and overshadowed their top-10 offense (3.40 gpg). Vancouver just lost two of three to the North Division-leading Montreal Canadiens, getting outscored 17-11, with the OVER going 3-0 and improving to 6-1 overall in the team’s games this year.

Meanwhile, the Senators will be trying to halt a four-game losing streak since they won their season opener 5-3 against the Toronto Maple Leafs as +170 home underdogs. Ottawa’s defense has not been much better than its opponent here lately, as the team gave up an average of 4.67 goals per game in losing three in a row to the Winnipeg Jets. Two-time Stanley Cup winner Matt Murray (1-2-1, 3.79) started two of the games in net versus Winnipeg and allowed eight goals on 54 shots.

Murray was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in an offseason trade and then signed a four-year contract extension with the Senators worth $25 million. He is 2-3 lifetime against the Canucks with a 2.91 GAA, and backup Marcus Hogberg (0-1, 3.78) could get the call in this spot too or in the second game on Wednesday – which is the front end of a back-to-back situation – or the third on Thursday. Ottawa has surprisingly won four of the past five meetings in this high-scoring series that has also seen the OVER cash in four straight. In fact, each of the last four games between these teams has seen at least seven combined goals scored.
