DailyFaceoff Morning Report — 02/16/22

The DailyFaceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.
We will highlight injuries that will affect today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.
Rangers top Bruins in shootout
Igor Shesterkin continued his Vezina-caliber season in a 2-1 shootout victory over the Boston Bruins. There was an odd moment with 40 seconds remaining in overtime where Shesterkin was forced to leave the game after being pulled by a concussion spotter. He then made a surprising return after overtime and went on to win a nine-round shootout.

The St. Louis Blues’ second line of Vladimir Tarasenko, Robert Thomas, and Pavel Buchnevich controlled the game, and each recorded three points in the victory. Thomas has put together a very nice 36 point season (6G / 30A), yet is only 20% owned in Yahoo! fantasy leagues.
Matt Murray left the game late in the third period with an injury. There was no update provided after the game. Murray had been playing terrific for the Senators since being recalled from the AHL early in January, going 5-2-2 with a .949 SV% in his last nine games.
Crosby hits milestone
Sidney Crosby scored his 500th career goal in a 5-4 come-from-behind overtime win for the Penguins. At age 34, Crosby is having another outstanding season and now has 19 points (7G / 12A) in his last 11 games.
Peter Laviolette wins 700th career game
Alexander Ovechkin scored two goals in the game and now has 31 on the season, giving him at least 30 goals in all but one of his 17 NHL seasons. He scored 24 goals in the COVID-shortened season last year.

Jake Oettinger and the Dallas Stars handed the Colorado Avalanche their first regulation loss in 19 games (17-0-2). It was only the ninth regulation loss for the Avalanche this season, two of which have come against Dallas.
Oettinger had a spectacular performance in the 4-1 victory, stopping a career-high 46 of 47 shots. Joe Pavelski broke a six-game pointless streak with a four-point night (2G / 2A), the fourth time this season he has recorded at least four points in a game.
Tyler Seguin had a big night of his own (1G / 2A) and now has 14 points (7G / 7A) over his last 12 games after starting the season with only 13 points (9G / 4A) in 35 games.
Oilers win third straight
Jay Woodcroft improved to 3-0 as the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers with a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers have outscored their opponents 11-to-3 during that stretch.
Before puck drop, Drew Doughty was recognized for playing 1000 career games.
