DailyFaceoff Morning Report — 02/24/22

The DailyFaceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.
We will highlight injuries that will affect today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.
Canadiens win again; lose Anderson and Byron
Sam Montembeault stopped all 32 shots he faced and recorded his first career shutout as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-0. Cole Caufield continued to play like a player reborn since Martin St. Louis took over as head coach, recording another multi-point night (1G / 1A), giving him 10 points (6G / 4A) in those seven games.

The Canadiens are now on a four-game winning streak, something they had not achieved in the entirety of last year’s Stanley Cup Finalist season. Both Josh Anderson and Paul Byron (upper-body) left Wednesday’s game and were transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons but were cleared and released.
Jets continue to fall in playoff race; lose 3-2 to Stars
The Winnipeg Jets gave up a lead with six minutes remaining before losing 3-2 in overtime to the Dallas Stars. The Jets have now lost three in a row and 12 of their last 17 (5-8-4) as they continue to lose ground in the Western Conference playoff race. Mark Scheifele continued his hot streak with a goal and an assist in the loss, giving him 13 points (8G / 5A) in his last nine games. Scheifele has 39 points (18G / 21A) in 32 career games against the Dallas Stars, more than any other team in the league.
Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin led the way for the Stars in their come-from-behind win. Benn had three points (1G / 2A) and has nine points (4G / 5A) over his last nine games while Seguin had two points (1G / 1A), including the overtime winner that needed to be reviewed before determining that the puck fully crossed the line.

Pavel Francouz played in only his second game of the month, after going 7-0-0 in the month of January, and made 32 saves on 34 shots in the win for the Colorado Avalanche. Francouz should see another start this week as the Avalanche will play back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday.
Rookie sensation Moritz Seider continued his push for the Calder Trophy with two assists in the game, giving him 12 points (2G / 10A) in his last 12 games. His first assist was a very subtle but brilliant pass off of the goalie to Filip Zadina.

— Daily Faceoff (@DailyFaceoff) February 24, 2022Hyman stays hot but Oilers lose second straight
After winning five straight games and outscoring opponents 22-8, the Edmonton Oilers have now lost two in a row and been outscored 12-6 in those games. It won’t get much easier for Edmonton as they finish off the week with games in Florida and Carolina.
Zach Hyman continued his hot hand with a goal and assist in the loss, and now has nine points (6G / 3A) in the seven games since Jay Woodcroft took over as coach and has seen his average ice-time increase by 1:57 while playing almost exclusively with Connor McDavid.
Corey Perry scored his 400th career goal, a powerplay goal, and added an assist. Perry is producing more consistently than he has in years over his current stretch of 27 games with 22 points (11G / 11A).
Arvidsson leads Kings
The Los Angeles Kings won their third straight game and remained in third place in the Pacific Division. Viktor Arvidsson scored two goals, including the game-winning goal on a beautiful wrist shot late in the third period, in the 3-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes. Arvidsson has been on fire in his last 10 games, recording 10 points (6G / 4A) and averaging 4.9 shots per game.
