DailyFaceoff Morning Report — 03/02/22

The DailyFaceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.

We will highlight injuries that will affect today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.

Oilers getting solid goaltending from Koskinen

Mikko Koskinen made 39 saves to record his first shutout since November 2019. Over his last eight starts, Koskinen has gone 7-0-1 and recorded a .939 SV% after going 0-6-1 with a .855 SV% in his previous seven.

The Flyers have now lost 20 of their last 23 games (3-15-5) while averaging the fewest goals in the league (2.22 goals per game). Despite all of their struggles, it was the first time they have been shut out during that stretch. Carter Hart played an excellent game in the loss, saving 29 of 31 shots. He has an 0-5-1 record this season in games where he has allowed two goals.

Laine does it again

Patrik Laine snapped a two-game pointless skid by getting an assist and scoring a gorgeous goal for the game-winner. He has 23 points (14G / 9A) in his last 14 games.

Damon Severson had a beautiful assist on a Nico Hischier goal for the New Jersey Devils. In the four games since Dougie Hamilton has returned from having a broken jaw, Severson has remained on the top powerplay unit and has four points (1G / 3A).

Murray, Sens can’t hold lead

The Ottawa Senators jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the first period, but the Tampa Bay Lightning came back with five unanswered goals to win 5-2. Brayden Point had four points (1G / 3A) and now has at least one point in 16 of his last 18 games (11G / 11A / 22PTS).

Matt Murray allowed five goals on 22 shots in the loss. It was only the second time in his last 10 starts (3-5-2) that he recorded below a .900 SV%.

Jets win wild game vs. Canadiens

The Winnipeg Jets took a 4-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the first period yet found themselves tied at 4-4 four minutes into the second. The Jets went on to score another four unanswered goals to win 8-4. In his 45th appearance of the season, Connor Hellebuyck allowed four goals or more for the 17th time, one more than the 16 times he did in the entire 2019-20 season when he won the Vezina trophy.

Mark Scheifele (2G / 1A), Pierre-Luc Dubois (1G / 2A), and Kyle Connor (0G / 3A) lead the way for the Jets, all recording three-point games. Scheifele only has points in two of his last seven games, but has still accumulated five points (3G / 2A) over that stretch. Evgeny Svechnikov scored a goal and an assist and has been very effective playing with Dubois and Connor, registering five points (3G / 2A) in his last three games.

Josh Anderson had a hat-trick for the Canadiens and now has six goals in his last five games after having the same amount in his previous 27.

Toffoli fitting in with Flames; defeat Wild 5-1

Cam Talbot allowed four-plus goals for the fourth consecutive game (0-4-0) while recording a .863 SV%. The Wild have now lost seven of their last 10 (3-7-0), with Kaapo Kahkonen in net for all three of the wins.

Ryan Hartman was held off of the scoresheet for the third consecutive game and only has five points (1G / 4A) in his last 15 games after having 16 points (6G / 10A) in his previous 15.

Tyler Toffoli scored a goal and an assist and has seven points (5G / 2A) in the seven games he has played for the Calgary Flames. Toffoli has mostly been getting third-line deployment but has found himself on the top powerplay unit over the last three games and has racked up three powerplay points.

Wings beat Eastern-leading Hurricanes; Seider, Larkin keep rolling

Dylan Larkin scored a goal late for the Detroit Red Wings to tie the game at three, extending his point streak to 10 games (7G / 11A / 18PTS). Moritz Seider had an assist on the game-winning overtime goal by Lucas Raymond and is now on a seven-game point streak (1 G / 10A / 11PTS). Seider has 40 points (5G / 35A) in 54 games, 18 more than Jamie Drysdale, the next closest rookie defenseman.

Avalanche beat Islanders 5-3; become first team to 40 wins

Devon Toews had a three-point game (1G / 2A) against his former team and now has 10 points (2G / 8A) in his last 10 games. Toews ranks ninth in defensemen scoring with 42 points (10 G / 32A) in 43 games. The Colorado Avalanche are the only team with two players in the top 15 of defensemen scoring. Cale Makar had two assists in the game and leads all defensemen with 58 points (18G / 40A) in 50 games.

DoBoer wins 500th game in 3-1 win for Knights over Sharks

Robin Lehner returned from injury and played his first game since February 9th, when he allowed six goals in a 6-0 loss to the Calgary Flames. Lehner had a light night on his return, stopping 16 of 17 shots in the win.

Reilly Smith scored two goals in the game, both assisted by Jonathan Marchessault, to secure the victory for the Golden Knights.

Ullmark struggles; Ducks beat Bruins 4-3

John Gibson made 31 saves on 34 shots to give him only his second win in his past seven games (2-4-1). It was also only the second time he allowed fewer than four goals during that span.

Linus Ullmark allowed four goals on 28 shots, including the game-winner by Trevor Zegras with only 22 seconds remaining in the game. Ullmark has lost four of his last six games (2-4-0) and has a .875 SV%. Bruins rookie netminder Jeremy Swayman had a shutout last night and was just awarded the NHL rookie of the month.
