Nostalgia triumphs yet again!

The Dallas Stars got plenty of attention for their 1999 throwback alternative jersey reveal last week, and that attention turned into results, as according to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, the launch day for the jersey was the most successful jersey launch day in not just Stars franchise history, but in NHL history.

As of right now, there are no details on how many jerseys were sold, as well as which players were the most popular choices for the jersey.

The jersey pays tribute to the 1999 Stars team that won the franchise’s first and so far only Stanley Cup in the 1998-99 season. It features a color inverse, with black as the main color and green as the secondary, and swapped out the yellow highlights for white and silver. Essentially, it’s a hybrid of the original jerseys worn by the team and their reverse retro jerseys in 2022.

That 1999 team won the Presidents’ Trophy with a 51-19-12 record, with their 114 points being nine more than the second-place New Jersey Devils, before besting the Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres to win the Cup, highlighted by Brett Hull’s controversial Cup-winning goal in triple overtime of Game 6.

The Stars have seen great success in the jersey so far this season, as they’ve won both games that they’ve worn the jersey. The first was a thrilling 4-3 win over the Utah Mammoth, which saw them rally from down 2-0 with goals from Roope Hintz, Jamie Benn, Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston to complete the comeback. They followed that up with a 6-1 shellacking of the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, which featured a hat trick from Johnston, another goal from Benn and Robertson, as well as Mavrik Bourque opening the scoring.

The Stars are scheduled to wear the jersey 10 more times this season, including three games in December against the Pittsburgh Penguins (Dec. 7), Florida Panthers (Dec. 13) and Toronto Maple Leafs (Dec. 21).
