The Stars are waiving him to clear up cap space as the trade deadline approaches. Once rumoured to be selling off pieces like Joe Pavelski, John Klingberg, and Braden Holtby, the Stars now find themselves deep in the playoff hunt and are looking to add. They currently have a 32-23-3 record and sit one point behind the Vegas Golden Knights for the second Western Conference wildcard spot with four games in hand.
The Stars defenseman has played in just 24 games this season, registering three assists, and has found himself on the wrong end of the ice more often than not with a 43.04% CF% and 46.48% xGF% at 5-on-5 this season.
The 35-year-old is in his third season with the Stars after being bought out by the Edmonton Oilers and is in the final year of a two-year contract with a $1.5-million cap hit.
Sekera is in his 16th NHL season, playing for the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Oilers, and Stars. In 834 career NHL games, he has 50 goals and 252 points, although he was better known for being an underrated defender in his prime.
