Dallas Stars sign Fredrik Karlstrom to one-year contract extension

The Dallas Stars have signed 25-year-old minor leaguer Fredrik Karlstrom to a one-year contract extension with an NHL AAV of $775,000.

Karlstrom was set to become a Group 6 UFA due to his status of being 25 and having played fewer than 80 NHL games over three seasons.

Karlstrom has eight games of NHL experience over the past two years, registering just one assist. He has spent the majority of his time with the AHL’s Texas Stars, tallying 26 goals and 55 points in a middle-six role over 112 games.

Before coming over to North America, the 2016 third-round pick played four seasons in the Swedish Hockey League, recording 26 goals and 60 points with Vaxjo and Linkoping. He also spent some time with AIK in the second-tier Swedish league as well.

Karlstrom has some experience with Sweden’s national team, recording three points at the 2017 and 2018 world junior tournaments. He also has has two games of experience with Sweden’s men’s team, but didn’t register a point.

Karlstrom’s signing gives the Stars some extra depth for the minors once again. The team has $7.394 million in projected cap space, with seven UFAs and one RFA in Ty Dellandrea to worry about. Luckily, most of the team’s top core – namely Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, Mason Marchment, Miro Heiskanen and Jake Oettinger – have at least a few years left on their deals.

Dallas was knocked out by Vegas in the Western Conference final after beating Minnesota and Seattle. Texas, meanwhile, lost the Central Division finals 3-2 to Milwaukee.
