Stars sign Jamie Benn to one-year contract extension

Jamie Benn is staying in the Lone Star State as the longtime Dallas Stars captain has agreed to a one-year contract extension, reports Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.
Seravalli adds that Benn’s extension will carry a $1-million average annual value, in addition to performance bonuses as an age 35-plus player.

Through 80 appearances with the Stars in 2024-25, the 35-year-old native of Victoria, B.C., collected 16 goals and 33 assists to finish sixth in team scoring with 49 points coupled with a plus-three rating and a team-high 70 penalty minutes. Benn then added three points counting a goal and two assists in the Stars’ third consecutive trip to the Western Conference Final.
Originally chosen by the Stars in the fifth round of the 2007 NHL Draft, the hulking forward has since seen 1,192 career contests with the club in which he has registered 399 goals and 557 assists for 956 points, second all-time in franchise history behind only fellow forward Mike Modano. A five-time 30-plus goal scorer, the 2014-15 campaign saw Benn presented with the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top point producer after he put up 87 points counting 35 goals and 52 assists coming in 82 games. Of note, Benn has also put up 28 goals and 52 assists for 80 points through 120 appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Per PuckPedia, Benn was in the final year of an eight-year contract that carried a $9.5-million cap hit and was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent as of July 1.
With Benn signed, the Stars and general manager Jim Nill have five key players remaining who can become unrestricted free agents as of Tuesday, a list which includes forwards Colin Blackwell, Evgenii Dadonov, and Mikael Granlund, as well as defensemen Cody Ceci and Brendan Smith, according to PuckPedia.
