“We’re excited to lock up Nils for two more years,” Stars’ general manager Jim Nill said in a statement. “He is a highly skilled defenseman with excellent mobility and vision. His ability to move the puck and create offense makes him a valuable piece for our team moving forward.”
The 25-year-old Lundkvist has three goals and eight assists for 11 points, averaging 16:29 of ice time through 52 games in 2025-26. In five NHL seasons, he has 12 goals and 43 assists for 55 points in 235 career NHL regular-season games with the Stars and New York Rangers.
He’s also played in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games, all during the Stars’ 2024 run.
Lundkvist, who was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Rangers, was traded to Dallas in September 2022 for a 2023 first-round pick and a 2025 fourth-round pick.
Before making the move to North America, Lundkvist, a native of Pitea, Sweden, spent parts of four seasons playing in his home country’s top domestic league. In 166 career regular-season games with Lulea HF, he recorded 30 goals and 48 assists for 78 points.
Internationally, he’s represented Sweden on several occasions, including two World Junior Championship appearances in 2019 and 2020. He was also part of their 2021 World Championship roster.
The Stars finished the 2025-26 season with a 50-20-12 record and 112 points, second in the Central Division and Western Conference and the third-best record in the NHL.
