Stars’ Tyler Seguin undergoes surgery; will be reevaluated after Olympics

Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill shared an update on the status of injured forward Tyler Seguin on Friday morning.

“Tyler Seguin underwent successful surgery on Tuesday, Dec. 16 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee,” Nill said via the team’s release. “Seguin’s time frame for return to play will be reevaluated after the Olympic break.”

Seguin suffered the injury on December 2 during the team’s game on the road against the New York Rangers after just 1:12 of ice time.

According to Sean Shapiro of DLLS, Seguin remains done for the regular season, but the reevaluation will determine if there is any possibility of a return in the postseason.

The No. 2 overall pick from the 2010 NHL Draft had 17 points in 27 games as he kicked off his 13th season as a member of the Stars. The former Bruin has been a key cog in Dallas’ forward group since the blockbuster deal that sent him to the Lone Star State all those years ago.

For his career, Seguin has 367 goals and 459 assists for 826 points in 1,016 regular season appearances. He’s added another 29 goals, 50 assists, and 79 points in 151 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The Stars have been excellent so far this season, as they sit second place in both the Central Division and NHL overall with a record of 23-7-5, trailing only the Colorado Avalanche.

While Dallas has gone 6-2-0 in Seguin’s absence, his loss is somewhat concerning due to the limited forward depth the Stars have at their disposal as a team up against the upper limit of the league’s salary cap.

The bottom six forwards currently consist of Sam Steel, Mavrik Bourque, Oskar Back, Justin Hryckowian, Radek Faksa and Colin Blackwell. None of those players have more than 12 points, but the production at the top of the lineup from Mikko Rantanen and Jason Robertson has more than offset any depth issues.

The Stars wrap up a quick two-game California road trip on Friday night against the Anaheim Ducks, and they’ll return home on Sunday to host the Toronto Maple Leafs.
